From what I understand, Hostess was negotiating with the Teamsters union and the Bakers union. Teamsters agreed on the contract but the Bakers held out, causing everyone to lose their jobs. I was once a union worker many years ago, Communication Workers of America, and the union was geared towards keeping the dumbest, laziest employees in their jobs, the smart hard workers didn’t need any help.
I was AFL-CIO myself but was lucky enough to be in a local that had enough brains to recognize that putting ourselves out of work wasn’t a good idea. We even had a no strike clause that the national AFL-CIO didn’t care for but the UAW wanted us so we really had the nationals over a barrel.
Aside from that we were definitely a union with a lot of idiotic union attitudes about work. I hated it.
The union principle at work where each figure represents a workers input:
90+70+70+70=300
300/4=75
95+70+70+70+70=375
375/5=75
100+70+70+70+70+70=450
450/6=75
The Teamsters did agree to take a pay cut in order to keep their jobs. My son took a $600 per month cut in pay just to keep his job of 17 years (delivery route driver).
The drivers are furious with the...and I quote, “liberal scumbag SOB’s”. He said they (bakers) were strong 0bama supporters while the drivers were Conservatives.
