WaPo Erik Wemple: Fox News’s Benghazi bombshell: Why haven’t other media followed?

First in a sprawling series on Fox News’s Oct. 26 Benghazi story.

It happens now and again in the world of news. An organization comes up with a stunning news report, and other outlets decline to follow up on the news. They just stay quiet. A number of scenarios are possible:

1) The outlet just has much better sources than the rest of the media;

2) The story is bunk;

3) The story is true, but the news contradicts what the rest of the media has already reported.

Last Friday, Fox News came up with a conversation-driver. A piece under the byline of reporter Jennifer Griffin opened with these revelations:

Fox News has learned from sources who were on the ground in Benghazi that an urgent request from the CIA annex for military back-up during the attack on the U.S. consulate and subsequent attack several hours later on the annex itself was denied by the CIA chain of command — who also told the CIA operators twice to “stand down” rather than help the ambassador’s team when shots were heard at approximately 9:40 p.m. in Benghazi on Sept. 11.

My family watches “Nightmare Before Christmas” every year on Halloween.

I think I have the answer.

When Jack came back from Christmastown, he attempted to convey his experiences to Halloweentown “people” and they had no idea of what it was like over there.

When you live in Liberaltown, it is so far detached from Realville, there is no longer a frame of reference.

Just like the band in the movie played all the Christmas music like a funeral dirge, Liberaltown has their own version of the truth that misses the point and the purpose of truth.

When confronted with how this conflict destroys things, they just don’t see it because they have never built anything. It was always someone else and they just use it.

And the language of a user is all they know.
