MSNBCs Mellisa Harris-Perry suggested on her show this morning that voters who are registered in multiple states should not be purged from voter registration rolls. She argued that the chances of voter fraud were negligible since it was highly unlikely that anyone would get on a plane and travel to another state in order to vote twice, or three times. Apparently, she forgot that most states allow voting by absentee ballot and have no way to check whether someone who votes by absentee ballot is registered or intends to vote elsewhere, either in person or with another absentee ballot.
According to a 2004 article in Slate, three newspapers conducted investigations that revealed double voting was a serious problem in the 2000 election:
The New York Daily News[] found that 46,000 New Yorkers were registered to vote in both Florida and New York .[B]etween 400 and 1,000 of these double-registrants voted in both states Other investigations revealed similar results elsewhere. The Orlando Sentinel found that 68,000 Florida voters were also registered in Georgia or North Carolina (the only two states it checked), 1,650 of whom voted twice in 2000 or 2002. The Kansas City Star discovered 300 potential cases of individual voter fraud, including Kansans voting in Missouri and St. Louisans voting in both the city and the surrounding suburbs.
No one who lived through the 2000 election will ever forget that George Bush won Florida, and the presidency, by a final margin of just 537 votes.
Because there is little coordination and communication between states, who frequently have different mechanisms for running both local and Federal elections, it is not difficult for someone to register to vote in more than one state. In 2004 the Smoking Gun website revealed that filmmaker Michael Moore was registered to vote in both New York and Michigan. Registering to vote in a new state should trigger the cancellation of a voters registration in the old state. Local state election offices are frequently understaffed, underfunded and many still rely on paper records to keep track of the voter registration rolls. It is not unusual for new voter registrations to not be reported to the election officials in the old state.
As is the case with dual voter registrations, most states prohibit a citizen from holding drivers licenses from two states simultaneously. When you apply for a drivers license in a new state, your old state is automatically notified of the new license and your old license is invalidated. If your license in your old state has been suspended or revoked the new state will be notified of your disability and you wont be issued a new license. If this kind of national computerized network can be accomplished to prevent drivers license fraud, the same thing can also be accomplished to prevent voter fraud in Federal elections. In fact, many if not most states allow citizens to register to vote when they get a new drivers license or identification card. Creating a national computerized network to centralize voter registrations in Federal elections may be the only way to suppress the persistent problem of multiple registration voter fraud in presidential elections.
Voter fraud cuts both ways. It hurts democrats, republicans, independents and anyone else who believes in free and fair elections. Reasonable voter fraud regulations should be encouraged, not vilified and ridiculed.
Voting by mail new to this guy?
I live about an hour from both Ohio and Indiana. I can make Illinois in under 3 and Wisconsin in under 6. (That’s driving BTW)
I could vote in 5 states on election day alone.
This just gets worse and worse. There must be hundreds of ways to commit voter fraud. Each day the reports of the ways and the wherefores become more and more scary. I can just see the Democrats trying them all. Something has got to be done. Every election cycle it just gets worse.
Nevermind the fact that it is illegal, but then again, when did that ever bother them?
Mellisa Harris-Perry is a brain dead homie for PPOS. Everything that comes out of her biased mouth should be discounted as the ramblings of a delusional lab RAT!
Cheating is just another way of achieving a goal, people. Like Obama had an earphone in the debates. No problem. But I remember the MSM outrage when someone said Bush had an earphone.
Some photo shop user may be could show some day light from the other ear and evidence of a earphone in the other ear.
Harris is simply shilling for the folks, promoting voter fraud out loud on live TV by marginalizing it. They must be furious about all the inroads Republicans have made purging the rolls of all the dead, illegals and ineligible this year.
Mellisa you ignorant slut, ever hear of an absentee ballot???
That means I'd vote in almost every state -- I might miss 2 of them.
LOL
Today’s Venice Herald-Tribune carried an article on early voting and included a comment from some nitwit Dem attorney who ran for state office in 2004 and lost: “Why not extend early voting and allow election day registration?” This guy is either a fool or totally dishonest because a voter bent on fraud could bring fraudulent credentials to several precincts and register and vote multiple times because the voting system would not have time to verify those credentials.
“We like to keep our cheating options open”
Such is the idea of equity and fairness to the liberal mind.
One of the more curious episodes of voter fraud is misuse of absentee ballot.
About ten years ago...a co-worker of mine went back to visit relatives. He has an older aunt who was mentally out-of-it, but still living in her house. Her nephew drops in each day. At the family get together....the aunt noted that she was voting in the state election...which shocked everyone because she was absolutely a nutcase. So they questioned her, and she spoke up about the nephew helping her get registered, and helping her to fill out the form business.
So later, the nephew shows up and they start asking him questions. He doesn’t deny anything. He basically filled out her ballot and voted the way that he wanted. Everybody at the family function was disgusted by this, considering it totally wrong.
I’d make a guess that this happens to around twenty thousand votes around the US for each election. The problem is....you can’t deny a nutcase...the right to their vote.
When you only need to present a name (and possibly an electric bill) you can be bussed to 4 different precincts in the same city by organized crime labor.
If you have a voter ID with photo, the system can process the photos to look for duplicate registered voters (under different names).
But that makes too much sense. Better to spin yarns about flying to a city to vote twice.
Exactly. This whole “early voting” thing makes it all too easy to cheat. On Election day, there are lines and its difficult to get to too many places—time and distance work against the cheaters. But when you spread the process out over weeks, its all to easy.
Ms Harris-Perry didn't forget. It takes some amount of mental firepower to put a hole even in a paper target.
I don’t think that that many people will risk being caught and being charged with a felon in order to vote multiple times for BO. Some may try, but I don’t think enough will to make a difference. It’s the absentee ballots that I worry about and the fact that our military overseas basically don’t get to vote.
This maroon reporter has never been to Florida where many NE liberals arrive on election day having taken a flight which allows them to vote in Mass, NY, Maine, etc before boarding. The leftists where I live (Sarasota) are the minority but they certainly are loud and mouthy. Now, absentee voting makes fraud a piece of cake.
