For 1/4 of democrats economic growth is an evil that has to be avoided.

That sort of talk excites the stupid Democratic base who will vote for him regardless (if they can get out of bed). Conservatives see it for what it is and makes us dislike the incompetent fool even more. Independents don’t care too much for it and in general it’s costing him votes with them.
