During the French & Indian war the French reported numerous accounts of not only torture but of cannibalism even in the square of Montreal.

I remember reading somewhere that the name Mohawk was a corruption of a local Indian dialect term for man-eater.

Stone age primitive people do these things.
According to classical writers the ancient Irish, Celts, Picts & some of the Germanic tribes did something similar.

I read a book about early explorers to the Far North called Tundra. Some were “accidental explorers,” like trappers who were captured by northern Canadian Indians. The book was a compilation of short diaries and narratives written at the time. Mostly, they were original manuscripts, written soon after the events by the actual witnesses.

One captured trapper was getting along well with his captors, who treated him like a pet. “Noble savages!” He was very content with them, for a while.

Until his happy band came upon a village of Inuit, and raided them asleep at dawn. They held down women and children, pinning them to the ground with their spears, so that they could enjoy torturing them while they writhed in screaming agony. Calling over friends to poke out each eye, etc.

Laughing merrily all the while.

This was a sudden revelation to the happy captured trapper, who concealed his revulsion until he could escape. Yeah, we European colonial exploiters have SO MUCH to apologize for......... NOT!
