Tropical Storm Isaac
NOAA/NHC ^ | 22 August 2012 | NOAA/NHC

Posted on 08/22/2012 1:47:19 PM PDT by NautiNurse

Tropical Storm Isaac threatens to dampen the Republican National Convention Monday in Tampa, Florida. National media outlets are having a grand time anticipating a Grand Old Party washout. Tampa mayor Bob Buckhorn (D) announced Wednesday that he is absolutely prepared to call off the convention next week, with anticipated attendance of 70,000 delegates, party officials, journalists, protesters and others. Buckhorn has not indicated that he would attempt to mitigate liberal protests or a hastily planned Joe "Plugs" Biden visit to Tampa during the convention.

Time will tell. Stay tuned...

Well, we’re inland, right between Tampa and Orlando. Nowhere to go! Hunker down, get the generator ready and cool down the beer! :)

I have been to Florida twice, last time was in 2004, rented a vacation rental home for a month and we all went to the theme parks. Loved the Orlando weather in january, just like our hotter Alaska summer, I’m not kidding except its drier in Orlando.

It has been my goal to set up some sort of snowbird site there, an old boat, an RV in storage or to just buy some property. But never in the summer, any temps over 70 I get heat exhaustion, it was 78 yesterday here and it wore me out.

Before you call me a wimp you are welcome to visit during the winter here FRiend. Stay safe when Isaac approaches.

I'll pass on that invitation, although I grew up in Western Montana, so I know cold!...and, I prefer warm!

That is exactly what our weather guys have been saying. ON this track, they said most storms are just torn apart when going over both mountain areas. We’ll see. All I want to know is ...will I be in some kind of error cone on the east coast so I can at least get one day off from work. :)

I appreciate the childhood trauma, but come on — lots of us have seen worse and managed to get over it. 65 mph wind isn’t too bad. I suppose you’ve never heard the wind scream. And riding out a hurricane 25 ft above sea level sounds to me like a dream come true. Sometimes you military/police/government types work yourselves into a frenzy by taking yourselves too seriously. Katrina was like that — an all-levels-of-government mass panic and power grab.

We’ve had a mild summer here in the coastal area of Texas this year. After last years drought, if Isaac does hit the east TX area, you can expect big flying dead trees.

LOL, the "NautiOne"! ;-)

Excellent thread, as always, NautiNurse. Thanks for keeping us up to date. I'm praying that Isaac fizzles...

Once it gets past Cuba...watch out

(Hope this graphic doesn't go away! - in any case, the Gulf of Mexico is holding a whole lotta bath water fuel)

FWIW, both the most recent (today) ECMWF and UKMET models have this storm intensifying in the Gulf and making landfall in LA or near the LA/TX border. GFS track has also moved westward to Fla. panhandle.

Anything can happen. Much depends upon how Isaac tracks over Cuba.

But it’s still looking like Tampa will get wet but not blown away.

Those water temps are above normal, we may be seeing a historic stormsoon, I hope not for the sake of humanity.

Right - and the track shifts are suggesting Issac might get some more elbow room to blow up.

We’re obviously a long way off from a landfall, but I suppose I’ll go ahead and give you the worse case scenario: what’s worse than a hurricane hitting Tampa during the GOP Convention? Answer: A Cat 3 storm hitting New Orleans while the Republicans are partying in Tampa.

At least LA would have a competent governor this time around.
