Russia has new martyrs for freedom. The girls of this hilariously named rock band Pussy Riot are imprisoned for critic of KGB dictator Vladimir Putin. The excuse used to send them into the dungeon was that they read an anti-Putin prayer at a church. The leadership of the Russian Orthodox Church is basically a branch of the Russian government whose main occupation is to prop up the regime by convincing the masses that Putin was appointed by God. They are modern day pharisees in the service of the KGB. The sham trial and draconian sentence show that the Russian government, judicial system, and state church lost all legitimacy. Russia needs real Christianity and another revolution. Hopefully this will wake up the Russian people.

Just wonder if these girls would get all this support if they pulled this stunt in a mosque instead of a Christian church.

Someone needs to tell the morons at CNN this is what happens in countries that disregard the concept of natural rights descending from the creator in favor of rights granted (or taken away) by men, elected or otherwise.

Maybe they'll rethink their political POV here at home. Or not.

But there is most certainly the right not to lose your liberty for doing so, even if the act is offensive.

Wrong. And they did lose their liberty for so doing, even if CNN is in a wad about it.

Too bad for them but they knew it would happen.

First Amendment:
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Freedom of religion is the first freedom. These three young women are just thugs denying freedom of religion to others.

Throw them in prison!

There is more to this story than what CNN is revealing here...

There is a group of protesters in Russia who have been engaging in “performance art” in public as a form of protest. That is, these women are protesters, more than they are a “band” of any kind. And at least one of them was involved with a protest group that did outrageous things like having sex in public as a form of protest. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Voina

For this final protest, the three women donned hoods, entered an Orthodox church along with members of that church, crossed themselves at the altar, and then proceeded to sing a PROFANITY-laced song asking the Virgin Mary to become a feminist and help put Putin out of power, among other things. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pussy_Riot#Church_protest

They are Leftists, and ironically they’ve been charged with a hate crime - it’s been fun reading the reaction from celebrities defending them, saying what these women did was free speech not “hate speech.”

Yes, two years seems a bit much. But they were facing seven years in prison. Putin himself urged for leniency. The prosecutor asked for three years. In the end, they were sentenced to two.

So they’ve been convicted, but how do we judge whether or not they’re....guilty?

Watched a few minutes of Fox News at someone else's house today - Sheps' time slot but someone else covering. Too ... er... delicate to call them anything but "a punk band".

Russia has new martyrs for freedom.

Yeah, right.

These leftist twits are martyrs for socialism at best and Communism at worst.

Their problem is Putin is wise to the machinations of the commies and KGB types, they trained him.

Pussy Riot should have pulled this stunt in the US, they would have gotten a full blown reception at the White House for their promotion of perversion, and Obama would have helped them sue the church they desecrated.

Really? Are you saying that queers busting into a Catholic mass face no consequences for doing so? Or when that guy in Maine rolled a pig’s head into a mosque, that would be ok?

I understand that the church and state there may be intertwined. But that particular sentiment is not what we would want to see applied here....imho

The self-generated high profile of these young women created a direct challenge to the regime whose hand they seemed determined to force (they had been arrested and “warned” before the church incident). I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt and assume they thought it would make a difference when Putin either looked away, or overreacted and showed himself to be a thin-skinned little fellow posing as a dictator — knowing they would pay a heavy price. (A two-year sentence starving in Russia’s TB-infested jails can be the death penalty.) They deserve respect for courage, and in Russia, sitting in prison for a cause traditionally wins sympathy (no benefits, but private sympathy). Putin was boss, is boss, will be boss. This required demonstration?

Yeah, they picked the wrong place to protest. But I don’t think they have a right to trespass and create a disturbance. But 30 days would do it, not 2 years.

Martyrs? Are you joking? These women are disgusting.

Putin is indeed a gangster as well

What does that add up to? Me not giving a s*** and hoping the USA stays completely out of it, as there is absolutely nothing to be gained from getting involved.

In my two decades monitoring human rights in Russia I've never seen anything like the Pussy Riot case -- the media attention, the outpouring of public support, the celebrity statements for the detained and criminally charged punk band members.

Not sure where this writer gets his information; he must make it up. These three nasty women burst into Moscow's golden-domed Christ the Saviour Cathedral wearing bright ski masks, tights and short skirts to storm the alter during a service. They smirked and giggled when the verdict was read to them.

A poll of Russians released by the independent Levada research group showed that 94% agreed with the verdict and 51 percent found nothing good about them.

Facts overlooked by Madonna and the liberal press.

There’s no basis for this assumption.

....Editor’s note: Rachel Denber is deputy director of the Europe and Central Asia division at Human Rights Watch.....

That says it ALL!!!!

“Human rightsers” have caused all manner of evil for DECADES!!!!

They CREATED Robert Mugabe! They demonized Lebanese Christians in the 1970s and 1980s, and Orthodox Christian Serbs in the 1990s and 2000s. The result has been the genocide of white Rhodesians and Matabele in the former Rhodesia, the creation of the Hizbollah muslim state in Lebanon, and the ethnic cleansing of Serbs in Krajina, Bosnia and Kosovo, with the creation of muslim criminal states in Bosnia and Kosovo!!!!

I FULLY support the Russian Orthodox and Serbian Orthodox Churches, which are the heart and soul of the Russian and Serbian people. I applaud Russia for making “human rightser” NGOs register as the foreign agents they are, and teaching the blasphemous, anti-Orthodox punkster women a lesson they will never forget!

The Church supports giving them a chance to repent, followed by a pardon. Fine with me. But “human rightser” NGOs have got to go!!!!

We may not like Putin—I don’t like a lot of what he does, either. But Putin came into power as the direct result of clinton’s nearly successful plot to destroy Russia forever under Yeltsin and the oligarchs. clinton’s Kosovo War was the last straw. As a result, the drunken, uber-weak Yeltsin put Putin into power. This may be thought of as yet another result of “human rightserism”!!!!

As for “real Christianity”—the Orthodox Church is the true Church established by the Holy Spirit in 33 AD. All the others are the result of schism. Rather than trying to make Russia protestant, we all need to return home to Orthodoxy.

There is no basic human right to barge into a church to make a political statement, jump around near the altar, and shout obscenities. But there is most certainly the right not to lose your liberty for doing so, even if the act is offensive.

"The right to lose your liberty"? WTF?

Uh, Rachel, they broke the law, they went to jail, if you don't like the sentence stick to that without trying to, like, think and chew gum at the same time.

But WHILE you're thinking about things anyway, do you have any comments on the recent stories about Muslims CRUCIFYING their opponents?

Rachel?

Hellloooooo, Rachel?
