In 1828, at age 18, Frederic Chopin took off for Berlin with a zoologist friend who was there to attend a scientific convention. Fred camped out at the opera house and the concert hall, where he heard young Felix Mendelssohn play piano.

By now, Fred was more confident of his output and proceeded to publish a number of pieces of varying quality. This first piano sonata has been overshadowed by his two later sonatas which are true giants of the repertory. For an 18 year old, there is definite promise.

Chopin: Piano Sonata #1 in C minor, Op. 4 (first movement)

The second movement is a short minuet.

(second movement)

The third movement is a short, expressive slow movement.

(third movement)

The finale is hair-raising.

(fourth movement)
