The Bryan and College Station school districts will increase meal prices by 10 cents for the 2012-13 school year while offering healthier selections for students.
One of the biggest changes is that school districts now must impose a maximum amount of food children can receive. The national school lunch program has always had a minimum standard for districts because of the large amount of malnourished children.
Sundy Fryrear, the Bryan districts director of nutrition services, said another big change is that every child will have to take a fruit or vegetable with their meal whether they are going to eat it or not.

Stupidity abounds anywhere the government is in charge......
Can they still bring lunches from home, or will the Food Gestapo be inspecting lunch boxes?
You Freepers shouldn't complain about Moo Shell ... the beautiful, humble, well-traveled and accomplished dietician.
Damn, no place for comments.
I was going to recommend that they upgrade their waste disposal contract, as they will soon have a lot more food waste to dispose of.
Subsidize anything and you will get more of it. The US subsidizes failure and poverty with such programs.
“Can they still bring lunches from home, or will the Food Gestapo be inspecting lunch boxes?”
You’re getting a bit extreme there. What is more likely is that parents will be required to have a “certified nutritionist” pack and then seal lunch boxes, if parents want the privilege of choosing what their kids eat for lunch (and maybe other meals, depending what hours they’re in school). Of course the parents will be required to choose from the “approved items list” and serving sizes...
You aren’t too far from the truth. Tyrants are always wanting more power, and it doesn’t matter how they get it.
Sad part is, parents will ALLOW it to happen. Then complain AFTER the fact.
Guess I’m glad I never had kids.
Required to take a fruit or vegetable “whether they eat it or not”.
There is your key phrase.
Follow the money.
Who is making the money with this policy?
Good grief. This is nothing new, as school cafeterias in previous years have been required to put certain things on every student’s tray, whether the student wants it, or not.
It’s alway resulted in a lot of fruit being wasted, and a good bit of milk, too.
Only those “out of the loop” will find this to be new “news.”
So they are going to limit portions to malnourished kids and teenagers?
swell. less rice and beans today kids. and yes that tofu burger has shrunk since last year. Enjoy!
And what does it teach a kid to say “take this vegetable or fruit whether you are going to eat it or not”
Hope they have a good contract with a local pig farmer because a lot of white skim milk and fresh produce is going to end up in the trash
when is this adminitration going to admit that a lot of the obesity is due to poverty and sloth, and their food is purchased with food stamsp and EBT cards that buy junk food
Make ebt cards unable to purchase junk food, period.
That's because wise, alert people who can see what's in store way down the road are shouted down as "radical extremists" when they express concern about seemingly implausible events stemming from new Leftist policies. And then, they are proven right when all the deniers are eating crow.
It was wrong then, and it’s still wrong. But how much of previous student lunch mandates were federally required before? I thought all of this had been a states issue until very recently.
That's wasteful. What we need to do is hire additional school staff to make sure that the students eat it required foods. If they don't, send their parents to the camps and put the children into foster care.
