Thousands Celebrate Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day [ABC news coverage]
ABC News ^ | Aug 1 2012 | Amy Bingham

People across the country are flocking to Chick-fil-A today, not because of the fast-food chain's chicken sandwiches, but because of its CEO's vocal support of traditional marriage.

Nearly 600,000 supporters signed up to celebrate Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day today, which former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee created to counter a boycott launched by gay marriage activists last week after Chick-fil-A CEO Dan Cathy said he was "guilty as charged" for not supporting gay marriage...

Courtney Clem, 22, strolled over to the Chick-fil-A in Crystal City, Va., to pick up lunch for her entire office and show her support. Clem said she wanted to eat at Chick-fil-A today not only because she supports traditional marriage but because she supports the First Amendment.

"We want to support their right to an opinion," Clem said. "I do support that opinion. And the right. Even if it was an opinion I disagreed with, I'd be here today. "

...

Gay rights groups launched a national boycott of the chicken chain last week, which the mayors of Chicago, San Francisco, Boston and Washington, D.C., have publically supported.

The Philadelphia City Council is considering a resolution to condemn the company for what councilman Jim Kenney called their "Anti-American attitude."

D.C. councilman Marion Barry tweeted that he does not support "hate chicken," Boston's Mayor Thomas Menino said there is "no place for your company" in his city and Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel said the restaurant's "values are not Chicago values."

The Chicago Republican Party is making a formal complaint against Emanuel today, alleging that the mayor has "broken civil rights laws pertaining to religious freedom and the First Amendment in denying Chick-fil-A a permit...

National conservative figures have responded to the controversy with an outpouring of support for the restaurant.

Agreed. Guess ABC’s engaging in a little minimalist spin.

Isn’t it funny that Dan Cathy had no idea what his remarks would beget? And the rainbow agenda surely was not expecting this blow-back.

God works in mysterious ways, His wonders to perform.

Yep, about halfway between Shelton and Allyn. I just may order a couple of t-shirts, though.

(if there is an actual kiss in, my kids don’t need to see that crap)

I remember when I was a little kid eating with my grandmother at McDonald's on Tremont St. in downtown Boston. Suddenly, two men in flamboyant drag strolled past the window. She was horrified and put her hand over my eyes, but it was too late. In those days it was a rare occurence, but now it's in our kid's faces 24/7. All we can do is explain that these people are mentally ill.

I’m going tomorrow & let the manager know the support continues.

Now that's a great idea!! If you're shut out today, just go tomorrow!

Our daughter and I are going to a concert tonight in Somerville MA, so we're going to make a detour to go to the CFA in the Burlington Mall. I'm hoping that by 7:30pm it will have slowed down a bit.

Crown America, owners of the West Manchester Mall in York, Pennsylvania barred reporters from speaking with people in line and even from taking notes:

I support private property rights but you don't check First Amendment at their door.

Some of the Twitter comments:

Pretty repressive, if you ask me.

THAT IS IN MA???? Awesome!

At least a third of MA residents are self-identified conservatives. Another third are hardcore lefties.

We simply need to win over that mushy 40% that rely on soundbites and emotions when choosing their candidates. People like my FIL, for instance who are extremely conservative in real life, but had no problem voting for Gerry Studds ("because he was good to the elderly!").

Note to all businesses in America: say you to don’t support homosexual marriage, set new sales records...

Same thing in Wilmington, NC. Went there for lunch and the place was packed. The parking lot next door at another restaurant that was closed was filled to capacity. I never did get my lunch.

Reporting in from Turnersville NJ , about 12 miles from Philadelphia. This ain’t no bible belt. Place is mobbed , two drive through lines both full and backing up into the parking lot and street, people lined up outside waiting to get in. Once I ordered, it only took a few minutes to get my food. Even with these unusual conditions, it was one of the fastest drive through’s I’ve ever been in.

Sounds a lot like MI...most of the country thinks it’s “all Detroit” or “all union”. We actually have a Republican governor and control both houses right now.

Thank you for that lightman, it is indeed repressive. I am surprised to hear this as obviously today involved a national event which had been planned in advanced and reported on- Natural for many to want to report on it from all perspectives, and they shouldn’t be blocked from doing so.

Thanks again for reporting and linking.
Cheers;
SJ

In La Porte, TX (Houston suburb) I tried to get breakfast. But the line of cars was a quarter of a mile long. I stayed in line to show support until I knew I couldn’t get to work on time if I stayed in line. So I went back mid afternoon and waited for about 15 minutes to get into the parking lot. Chick-fil-A had marshaled maybe about 40 employees and they were maintaining the dining room like always and the meals came out fairly quickly....they were simply mobbed with customers. (Pretty obvious they have great management) The big WalMart across the street provided parking for streams of pedestrians headed for Chick-fil-A.

Maybe Wendy’s realizes that customers don’t respond well to guys sporting little girl pigtails with ribbons at the end. Congrats to Wendy’s for figuring it out.

careful. Much of the support from those stores comes from the store owners. Not the corporation behind the name.

Bottom line, they support CFA.
