If you mandated a car be made out of very light-weight metals and mandated that 3-cylinder light-turbo cars be the norm....then 54 mpg is very possible. Moving the national speed limit to 50 mph would also help. Course, none of these are very acceptable except in California.

We aren’t talking aboiut one car here. We are talking fleet mileage.

In order to make up for their SUV’s the smaller cars they sell would have to get 75 Mpg. Then they would have to be able to sell these little golf carts.

That would induce a depression. Commerce will slow costs to rise precipitously

California restricts trucks to 66 and is dying.

What is stupid about mileage regs for cars is they don't take into effect what the car will be used for, or the number of passengers. 50 mpg might, (MIGHT) be a reasonable requirement for a single passenger commuter vehicle, but what about parents with children? What about carpooling, or sharing rides to activities? How is it more efficient to have six mothers each drive to the same practice event because they can only fit their own children in their 'efficient' car? What if I have more than two children under 16 (or whatever the dagnabed age it is that children have to be before than can sit in the front seat) What if my daughter's friend wants to come with us to the pool?

Enviroweenies can have my sport ute when they pry the keys out of my cold, dead fingers. Until then, stay away from the front bumper.
