If, as I expect, your rendition is accurate, it is clear proof that the current resident's first impulse is to LIE.
It is particularly egregious when there is no reason for the lie. The repair, return of a loan, and continued presence of WC's presence on the premises would have stopped the discussion.
We are being ruled by a little kid with huge ears, thin skin, and a knee-jerk need to yell "did not" whenever someone catches him doing just about anything.
For that matter, given his recent comments on successful non civil servants, he's big on "did not" in a lot of situations.

Obama works really hard at creating an image of himself as a mainstream American who happens to be black. He publicly declares Israel to be our bestest buddies while Hillary is handing out Massad intel to nuclear jihadists. This administration works very hard at hiding who they are, and the press goes along.
Sending a Churchill bust back to the Brits as an obvious insult is not a PR mistake I would expect from them. Obama has anti-colonialist blood (assuming certain parentage), and may well hate Churchill...I just think he would hide it the same way he tries to hide his disdain for Israel.
