As we wait for Mitt Romney to pick his running mate in the next few weeks, the last successful GOP running mate has been privately advising the current GOP nominee and the head of his VP search committee, Beth Myers. Cheney believes that the #2 slot has to be filled with someone ready to take over the top job on Day 1 and that John McCain flunked that test in 2008. In an interview with ABC News Jonathan Karl, Cheney called the selection of Sarah Palin a mistake:

Dick Cheney is WRONG! I would never have voted for McCain WITHOUT Sarah Palin being on the ticket. McCain would have lost by a landslide without her! Cheney is just another establishment GOPer!
I’d say picking John McCain was the huge mistake.
I’m intrigued that GLBT-ABC-Disney is concern that the GOP don’t blow their chances by choosing “the wrong” VP candidate.
Neither Barack Obama nor Joe Biden have the skills necessary to be President of the United States of America. The alphabet networks would never report that inconvenient truth.
McLame lost in a blow out. He would have been vaporized if conservatives were not voting bottom of the ticket for Palin.
Hey DICK, want to win??? How about giving us conservatives top of the ticket instead of arch RINOs like Romney.
“Id say picking John McCain was the huge mistake.”
Ditto...
the repub elites are desperate and in total fear of Sarah Palin! Here is a clown on his deathbed dissing an American Patriot. How low can a scumbag go? Get lost cheney.
Read this earlier today
I think Palin was the reason McCain did as well as he did. But I agree that Palin needed more time in higher office.
Of course we have a POSOTUS who had very little background other than as outside agitator. And it shows.
Bush/Cheney was a big mistake.
The GOP should have realized the this country is no longer “your daddy’s America”. Over half of the voters are freeriding, freeloaders who only vote to get themselves government handouts and freebies.
Orders from the GOP-e?
It was totally petty and a shameless MSM butt kiss on his part.
Lost some respect for the former Veep...
I agree completely. I had decided to just not vote but when he picked Palin, I held my nose and voted for McCain.
No, the mistake was McCain, not Palin.
In 2012, the country will get either Romney or Obama. I won't be participating in that particular voting exercise because I would be ashamed to have voted for either.
It's people like Cheney -- deep establishment guys -- who have built a political system that feels broken, and dirty and wrong to me. The Tree of Liberty thirsts and I have no plan to do anything that might delay the drink.
The only reason I voted for mcain/Palin was because of Palin. Otherwise I would have voted for the Libertarian or Constitution party ticket.
Had McCain picked a southern governor of some sort who had faced off the media and had some experience...it might have swung 500k votes over toward McCain. I personally think some insider to the McCain inner circle pushed Palin as someone likely to stumble the campaign. I would also make this comment...had Palin simply gone on being Alaska governor for a full eight years, and eventually challenged Senator Lisa...it would have been a better path in the long run and given her more time to mature. Accepting the VP option...was the wrong choice.
Cheney is part of the anti-social conservative gop-e, a Romney man.
Yes, Cheney is wrong and McCain was the poor choice.
I believe Palin was a bold choice. I believe Quayle hurt Bush-1 but he survived. Quayle had been an upcoming bright Senator (ala Rubio) but the media sliced and diced him from the git-go.
Ferarro was similarly torn apart due to “questions” about her husband. (Media usually does not care about men’s spouses — unless they are Republicans)
I’d like to see Mitt pick Sarah this time. I do not see anyone better. Jeb Bush? are you kidding? Then a bunch of nobodys (ala Pawlenty). The media would ballyhoo Christy’s girth unmercifully.
The only one who may help deliver a key state, Ohio, would be Portman but he is really not well known in the Buckeye state.
Puckings are slim.
I would have liked Gen Petraeus but Bambi has marinated him in so much crap in the mishandled wars, he may have some tarnish.
Voting for Palin was the first time I was truly enthused about voting since Reagan, as she exemplified everything I wanted in a leader, from her conservative/reformer stances to her grit, to her non-elitist background. So, she’a a MISTAKE? Well, if she’s a mistake to the “GOP” leadership, then the GOP does not represent me, and the only “mistake” was that I ever put any faith, trust or respect in the Republican Party, which obviously holds people like me in contempt.
I’ve lost some respect for the former VP too.
Does Cheney not think Sarah Palin, his fellow Republican leader, has feelings and dignity and did not deserve for him to publicly slam her?
Didn’t Reagan have some wise saying about Republicans not belittling each other?
Palin was more ready then McCain.
McCain lost not Palin........
Yes, I will have lost much respect for Cheney if he was accurately quoted (and I will check it out)
Said it before, and i’ll say it again. Cheney is a tough guy, as long as other people have go act do the tough stuff on his behalf. And he is no conservative. He’s a gay marriage, open borders, NWO Bushie. Pure GOPe. A total tool that plays that Wyoming macho persona for all its worth.
And didn’t go to Vietnam, because he “had more important things to do”.
But he is worshipped here sometimes. Weird.
If the GOP was intended on replacing Mondale's run for president as "Most Epic fail" ever.
The mistake was the Sarah Palin was not at the Top of the Ticket in 2008.
And that mistake has been repeated in 2012 as Sarah Palin will be be at the top of the GOP Ticket.
The mistake is the GOPe selecting Romney at the head of this years Republicrat ticket! Just as bad, if not worse than the selection of McSTAIN in 08.
McCain was the loser from day 1. He remains one of Obama’s biggest fans.
Agreed
McCain was a terrible pick. Without Palin, McCain's defeat would have been even worse.
Thank you MSM & Reps elites for giving us 0bama. (/s)
Got that one right. His daughter shamelessly and disgustingly “married” her lesbian partner.
I think Cheney is wrong and that SP could have easily shouldered the burden of being POTUS from day one. She’s smart, tough, thick-skinned, humble, a good learner and above all else, principled.
Big government experience is not all its cracked up to be, or career politicians wouldn’t have wrecked the ship of state as badly as they have.
The more government experience a pol has, the more likely they are to have been corrupted by that experience.
When Cheney became eligible for the draft, during the Vietnam War, he applied for and received five draft deferments. In 1989, The Washington Post writer George C. Wilson interviewed Cheney as the next Secretary of Defense; when asked about his deferments, Cheney reportedly said, “I had other priorities in the ‘60s than military service.”
Arrogant turd
You said it all!
Of course it’s orders from the GOP Elite. They want to make sure Sarah is shut out of the convention. I hope she finds a way in, or upstages them nearby.
Why am I sensing that Dick Cheney has once again put the media in it’s place without even breaking a sweat? I don’t believe for one minute that he feels this way about Palin. Gotta think he is playing a game designed to eventually benefit the GOP somehow.
Yes, Cheney was classless, especially the way Sarah has been so disgracefully mishandled and pilloried.
Reagan observed the 11th Commandment (Thou shalt not speak ill of any fellow Republican).
Reagan said he got it from California State GOP Chair Gaylord Parkinson:

Do ANY of you people really need any more evidence that the Romney forced nomination is part of a grand GOP elite plan to marginalize the Tea Party? They want us to be like the blacks in the RAT Party . just line up and vote for who we tell you boys.
My immediate thought, too. Palin was inspired. Nominating old, lethargic, listless, “cross-the-aisle,” uninspiring, GOP-Establishment to the core, McCain was an epic blunder.
Yeppers. I voted for Sarah Palin not that motard McCain. The Republican party is in the crapper as far as I’m concerned. :(
I just stunned at how people still treat this person like she is so incapable of being president.
I was one of those “I hope she runs” people back last summer, and thinks if she was president today, our nation would be on the rise “big time”.
I mean, come on, Mr. Cheney, you didnt even run for the job yourself!
He is right..Palin should have NEVER accepted.
She went right down the hole with that asshat old bastard, and should have never agreed to it. He used her and it cost her. Problem is, he created a monster and they dont know how to deal with it. That was the only good thing that came out of it.
How sad. A faded, falling star trying to bring a bright, rising star down with it.
Cheney also almost singlehandedly set us in the course we are on now with homos in the military. He decided that aan all male fighting force was bad. Women didn’t fly fighter jets when he came in. But they did under him. And his handling of tailhook gutted the finest Naval Air arm the world has ever seen.
He destroyed numerous careers. Some of the best we’ve ever had.
There is nothing to admire in Cheney. He’s a coward who amazingly gets “man” credits for being willing to send others for doing what he wouldn’t.
PS, and his wife writes porn, and his mother was a softball champion. (just saying)
“A Mistake?”
Only in the sense that it was a mistake for Sarah to get tied up in such a directionless, loser campaign.
And that it gave the Lamestream Media the motivation and opportunity to rip her to shreds in their mindless lust for Obama.
Cheney is a compassionate conservative who has allowed his love for his daughter to confuse his foundation of Biblical values.
Mr. Cheney, Sarah Palin is not at risk of becoming a Pillar of Salt (which is why we Love her). Change your position on Gay Marriage and extricate your heart from the practices of this vile world (and stop hating on Sarah for walking the walk).
While we’re on the subject of who should and who shouldn’t be in the White House, could you run by me again anything you’ve done for conservatism, Mr. Cheney?
Hypocrites! Then these same stale, corny GOPE should quit pushing....Roooooobio! and Christy Creme and others who have far less or just as much experience than Sarah had when she was choosen in 2008 but it’s not about Sarah and her supposedly lack of experience that they are critical about. -—— it’s who she represents, that being us and her not kowtowing to represent them -— the establishment
...I guarantee that if they don't invite her to speak at the convention now they will be forced to crawl on their knees for her support later.
Agreed. McCain was the mistake on the 2008 ticket. Worst candidate in my lifetime.
And when you’re finished with that Mr. Cheney, name something about being president—a task, duty or challenge of any kind—that is beyond Palin’s abilities.
