I’m one of those who just could not grasp Algebra. I the world ever comes to a crisis and I need to know what time a train that left Cleveland at midnight going 60 mph pass a plane from Baltimore, I’m screwed.

Same here. Me and higher math never, ever, ever gelled.

My sister thinks algebra, calc, trig, and the like are funny and would burn right through problems.

However she would melt down at moderate to complex accounting problems. I tended to do rather well.

ROFL!!!

That was a great way to start my morning computer session.

I have a B.S. degree in Chemical Engineering. I tell people all the time that the MOST useful course I EVER took in school was... algebra. I still use it today.. frequently.

That said, I think Algebra I covered all the parts that I really use. I can see how a great number of people really DON’T NEED Algebra II.

Math, particularly algebra, is something for which you have to reach that "clicking" point to really get and, consequently, enjoy. Many, if not most, people never reach that point. A decent teacher or parent is usually the key.

I was one of those who dreaded math and just didn't think I'd ever get it. It was a sixth-grade teacher who really turned me on to it with a little extra attention and her own enthusiasm. I had trouble later on in high school, but again drew from that foundation I got earlier in sixth grade, and ended up tutoring calculus students in college.

I know I shouldn’t laugh but... that WAS very funny.

We were required our first two years of high school to take college prep courses. By the time one reached his/her Junior year they pretty well knew if they planned to further their education or pursue some other field. So if you decided to attend college...you had two years of prep behind you which was excellent. If you didn’t go to college... you STILL had two years of prep behind you which didn’t hurt at all. I think it is a good thing.

I didn’t get it either but I could figure that out and there wouldn’t be any Xes or parentheses.

I’m one of those who just could not grasp Algebra...

I was exactly the same, was told by the teacher to give it up I would never be able to comprehend it. Ended up having to take Algebra in College just to take the programming class I wanted. The first day in class the teacher put an equation on the board that took up the entire board. He said, by the end of this class you will be able to solve this. I broke out in a sweat.

Funny thing was I passed that class with a 4.0 grade. I loved it. What a difference a competent teacher makes.

"not grasp algebra"

I'll bet you could grasp it easily now. I assume you're appreciably older now than when you took the algebra. When I was a freshman in high school, I was put in a class where every other student had been taught the rudiments of algebra in the eight grade. My school didn't. I struggled to understand the basic concepts.

Jump almost thirty years and I'm attending college. To prepare for a college intermediate algebra course, I purchased a basic algebra primer. I'm sure they had many of the same problems and type of tests that befuddled me when I was thirteen. I found the book to be extremely easy. Because I was thirty years older and simply smarter. You'd probably find it a lot easier too.

Sorry about that.

The odd thing is that you use Algebra every time you have to calculate what your expenses would be if ......

And when you see the lines left by waves on the sand, you are witness to trig.
