As horrible as this crime was we've got to recognize that this guy just might be....”might be”,I say;not “surely is”...desperately mentally ill.That is,suffering from a profound biological/physiological disorder of the brain.Perhaps schizophrenia,a devastating brain disorder that usually first manifests its symptoms in the mid teens to mid twenties and whose symptoms can build up gradually over time.

This guy is not—IMO—a schizophrenic (I am a physician, but not a psychiatrist). Schizophrenics cannot plan like this guy did, nor could someone in the throes of this most serious mental illness do what he did in booby-trapping his apartment. Ted Kaczynski was not schizophrenic, nor was the Norwegian shooter Breivik. Perhaps borderline personality disorder or other diagnosis fits best. I would bet on drugs (legal and/or illegal) as being the main culprits with this dude’s descent into mental hell.

I don't consider “mentally ill” a mitigating condition, nor do I consider drugs, alcohol, or age reasons to reduce the punishment, even if the idiot courts do.
One of the most amusing things to come out of the idea of youth as a mitigating condition is that Moslem families will get their kids to do their “honor killings” because their punishment will be relatively trivial.
