I have commented to my students who’ve asked me about “the plan” should there be a shooter in the school that, after we line up against the wall,if the shooter should enter the room, I’m going to go as full psycho as I can, do everything in my power to take the shooter down. My students immediately start laughing and commenting that I’ll probably be killed (I’m not exactly the most ominous-looking specimen of masculinity to walk the planet.) Once the laughter dies down, I mention that right after me, the shooter will likely turn his attention to others in the room. I then say something like, “Of course, you’re free to join me in my attempt to live.” End laughter; cue student introspection.
“Hide behind the Unicorn, keep low and follow the trail of Skittles to safety”
I usually have a couple of students volunteer to break out the window to facilitate the escape of the class, while I guard the door with the sharp end of a broken yardstick. Not a great plan but it is, unfortunately, what it is.....
Sharpened end of a yardstick, huh? I keep my 3 hole punch on the shelf along the door wall. Door opens in toward the shelf. First person coming in is getting a two-handed 3 hole-punch upper cut...(tell my wife, “I love you,” for me, will ya...”Let’s roll!”)
Shoot
Survive
Slip Away
Perhaps you could take to hitting a few pop balls to the kids during lunch/after class as a hobby/exercise. Of course you would need a large bat in either wood or metal. (Hmmm - you could start a vanity - “Buying a bat - wood or metal? What size?”)
If I were a coach that might work....hmm.... Definitely metal though- it doesn’t stain as easily as wood....
My 3 hole punch isn’t fit to be a three hole punch, let alone a weapon.... A thrown metal stapler would hurt, but those are usually not were they were left.
Might I suggest a collapsible baton?
Illegal in California.
Seriously.
Counts as a weapon. As per state law, if I set foot on my job, I have to be disarmed....
