Most will think it is a ruse but it is possible to progam a person to kill and not remember it.

He once talked about changing the past through temporal illusions.

Or he may have fried his brain by self experimentation.

Or just maybe, his public defender has told him that the only way to avoid the death penalty would be to plead insanity. (Not that that's gonna convince anybody, but hey, it's worth a shot.)
