I think that anyone who’s ever been anesthetized with a drug like Versed knows pretty much how an animal perceives the world. With no memory of the past, and no anticipation of the future, the creature lives perpetually in a present that is of the most fleeting duration.

Now I just can’t agree there. I’ve seen waaaaaaaaay too many indications that animals have memory, in some cases even understanding.

But *food* animals...well, I reckon maybe their Maker saw a kindness in making em dumb, and those who raise them for a living know their quirks and tendencies better than anyone else.
