Dead Malls

Well, unless the phenomenon fades away, retail shops and malls will have no choice but to mirror the system used in the old Soviet Republics. Retail shopping areas as a social hub of activity will be no more. Merchandise will not be on floor display or within easy reach. If you want something, you will have to approach the store counter and point to what you want. A small army of clerks will then move the selected item from secured inventory into your hands, only after you have paid for it. "Welcome to our glorious future, citizen! Make your purchase and move on."

Isn’t this exactly what is already done in some small stores in ghetto areas? With the clerk behind a bullet-proof shield, and a “drawer” through which money and merchandise get “passed”?

Welcome to AmeriGhetto — coming soon to a neighborhood near you!
