My heart is feeling pride, excitement, and some trepidation, since today my beautiful 18-year-old son enlisted in the US Marine Corps. Oorah! I’m a Marine Mom, and there are bumper stickers all over my car to prove it.

Hi, Kathy! (((hugs)))

We had a bit...2/10ths of an inch....yesterday, but not enough
to keep us from having to hand-water on Thursday. Darn it!

How are you doing? Got payroll under control?

The Best Things In Life

July 18, 2012

An old adage says, “The best things in life are free.” There’s a lot of truth in that. Some people, however, believe that the best things in life are expensive or perhaps elusive. Recently I saw a sign that made me smile and think. It said, “The best things in life are not things.” What a great way to say it! The value of family, friends, and faith points us to the realization that what matters most in life is all wrapped up in people and the Lord.

Solomon was well qualified to speak about material things because he “surpassed all the kings of the earth in riches and wisdom” (1 Kings 10:23). His advice? “Do not overwork to be rich; because of your own understanding, cease! Will you set your eyes on that which is not? For riches certainly make themselves wings; they fly away like an eagle toward heaven” (Prov. 23:4-5). His recommended course of action was, “Apply your heart to instruction, and your ears to words of knowledge. . . . For surely there is a hereafter, and your hope will not be cut off” (vv.12,18).

The best things in life are the eternal riches that come from God’s goodness and grace in Jesus Christ. We do not hold them in our hands, but in our hearts.

The treasures of earth are not mine,
I hold not its silver and gold;
But a treasure far greater is mine;
I have riches of value untold. —Hartzler
Our greatest riches are the riches we have in Christ.

Outstanding!

Thank you for raising such a fine young patriot.

I'm sure he'll make an excellent Marine.

YOUR HEART IS WITH THE BOYS OF 3/5, NOW AND ALWAYS!

The 3rd Battalion, Fifth Marine Regiment forged its tradition and reputation in the Bois de Belleau in June, 1918. Against heavy odds, they fought with such ferocity in winning through to victory that the German Field Marshall Von Ludendorf conferred upon them the sobriquet “Teufelhunden” (Devil-Dogs).

The Battalion blazoned this tradition of victory through heavy odds in WWII in the great battles of Guadalcanal, New Britain, Peleliu and Okinawa.

In Korea, the saga continued at the Pusan Perimeter, Inchon, Seoul and the Frozen Chosin.

The legend was emblazoned in Vietnam, where the Battalion served in Chu-Lai, Da Nang, Quang Nam, and in such battles as Operation Union and Union II in the Que Son valley, the epic Battle of Hue, engagements in and around An Hoa, the Arizona Territory, Gonoy Island and the highlands to the west.

Most recently, the Battalion served in a highly successful deployment to the Sangin District of Helmand Province, Afghanistan. I have spoken on several occasions with GySgt. Terence D’Alesandro, USMC, Company Gunny of Lima 3/5 in Afghanistan during the Sangin Deployment. To anyone who questions the quality of today’s Marines, I suggest you have a conversation with Gunny D! He is a straight shooter and an inspirational leader. OORAH, Gunny D!

The courage, professionalism and esprit de corps demonstrated by today’s 3/5 Marines does the battered heart of this old FMF Corpsman good. They have upheld, embellished and augmented a proud tradition.

My heart is with them now as it was over forty years ago, and as it will ever be. May the Lord be praised that our Nation produces warriors like these! It augurs well for the future of our Nation that we continue to do so in these perilous days.

SEMPER FI, BROTHERS, UNTIL WE MEET GUARDING THE GATES!

Thank you. We are very exhausted but joyful. My boy is scheduled to go to PISC in January and is trying to work out some way to go earlier. He's been waiting and working many years for this and doesn't want to wait any longer.

I was especially proud because the people at MEPS recognized his tremendous military attitude and bearing. People can tell a hundred yards off that he carries himself like a Marine. All the personnel there noted how correct he was and how very well he did on everything. When the kids were being sworn in, the room was full of 20 sloppy, confused, slightly scared civilian boys and girls who were trying in a sweet, lame manner to be military, though they weren't quite sure how, and then there was one serious boy who stuck out like a sore thumb because he had studied to do everything perfectly. This is a kid who wants a DI to be hard on him so he can learn more.

Please agree with me in prayer for his safety and mental peace.
