He was great in “Emperor of the North” as the rail yard bull. Quite a contrast to McHale.
RIP Marty!
Met him briefly when he came into a gas station where I was working in Van Nuys, California back in 1973 or so. A prince of a man.
You'll be missed, Mr. Borgnine. Thank you for the entertainment - and for your service.
Loved him in the Poseidon Adventure. I know it was 70’s disaster film schlock, but it’s one of my favorite movies. Loved Gene Hackman in it too.
He had a great career. Thanks Ernest; rest peacefully.
Unfortunately, born in Italy. Not eligible under Article 2 Sect. 1
Rest easy shipmate, your watch is over.
Oops. Born in Conn. Tried to make a joke. Yeepsh.
Also a supporting role in “Here To Eternity” where he played a sadistic sergeant.
You left out “From Here to Eternity” ...... Though he was certainly not a good guy in that.
A class act as a man, citizen and husband. Old School! RIP
Borgnine was fine actor, he got the blue collar thing.
RIP

Borgnine was a great antagonist in “Ice Station Zebra,” in which he played a Russian double-agent (paired with Patrick McGoohan).
He was also consistently excellent as the character of “Dominic Santini,” a supporting role in a Cold-War-era action series on TV called “Airwolf.” This series began as one of the best written and best acted action series ever. It was gradually dumbed-down, and the anti-tyranny / pro-America politics diluted, by the studio execs, who claimed they were trying “to reach a broader audience.”
Hulu.com has all four seasons of “Airwolf” for free (including the notoriously bad 4th season, in which all the original leads were killed off, and the entire production moved to a super-low-budget company in Canada. The original lead in seasons 1-3 was Jan-Michael Vincent, who was replaced in season 4 by Barry van Dyke). For those unacquainted with this show, I highly recommend it, especially if you compare the first 3 or 4 episodes of Season 1 with almost any episode of Season 4.
The show’s theme music is also very compelling.
Sadly, Jan-Michael Vincent is long retired from acting, having fallen prey to drug abuse and alcoholism. I’m wondering if he’ll make any statement regarding the passing of Borgnine.
So many of the great names of Hollywood and pro sports teams of his generation served proudly and honorably in the military, many in actual combat.
Compare that with the Nancy Boys of today who think they are courageous for supporting open homosexualism.
Thank you for your service to America and for the many great and varied roles. Fair winds and following seas, Mr. Borgnine.
Aye, Aye, Skipper...one last R & R trip to New Caledonia before shoving off to that big Lake in the Clouds. Perhaps ol’ Leadbottom will be waiting at the checkerboard. RIP.
