America's Gayest Neighborhoods

This month cities all across the world are partaking in Gay Pride celebrations. Jed Kolko, the chief economist at Trulia, takes a look at the neighborhoods in the U.S. with the largest gay communities ("gayborhoods").

Using 2010 U.S. Census data, which lists 646,000 same-sex households, he calculated the neighborhoods with the largest percentage of same-sex male couples:

Most homosexual (male) city in America: Castro (San Francisco) California: 14.2% of households.

Most homosexual (female) city in America: Provincetown (Cape Cod) Massachusetts: 5.1% of households.

And yet the militants in the homosexual community will have us believe 10% of our entire nation is homosexual.

Instead of hatred, I suggest we look at this list of cities and pray for their repentance and for God to change their hearts to turn to Him. He *can* save their souls.

There are so many variables here - many heterosexual people are opting NOT to get married. Personally, I blame the legal system who has lawyers and passed laws that penalize men (exclusively) when they marry. Seriously, is there a single benefit that a man gets when he marries? Once married, he forefeits 50% of his income and worldly possessions (should the 50:50 divorce occur); only under rare conditions does he get possession of any children. He can be accused of practically anything, and must prove his innocence. And lastly, a man need not get married to find a sex partner.

So, why would a heterosexual man get married?

Leaving that aside, very few homosexual men get married - because it's hard for them to do so. Many choose not to have a 'steady' and move on from one relationship to another.

So, the numbers given are truly hard to calculate. I do not believe homosexuality is really much above 3-5%, and no where close to the percentage of homosexuality that rate that is promoted on TV. I find it interesting that the rate is in the 3-5% range, because that is the same range that birth defects are also found. I believe that homosexuality is a defect, physically, mentally, spiritually and morally.

Interesting - but I would think that people in your situation (same sex room-mate; cohabitating for financial reasons) would be a lot higher than 0.3%. I lived with room-mates for over a decade; and when I grew up, this was the norm for young adults between moving away from their parents until the room-mates got married.

It’s amazing how NYC stays off the gay lists. NYC has the largest homosexual population in America. The distributed percentage is less but they don’t spend their time distributed. You’ll never see such sheer numbers of gays in one spot than in NYC.

Same-sex households are often just same-sex roommates.

I’m the parent of some of these young adults who share a roof and rent. As do many of their right-living, church-going single friends. Makes perfect sense.

Sounds like this study is based on flawed assumptions.

That's same-sex couples. Presumably there are also a lot of gays in those communities who live alone, and that could bring those numbers up some.

Northampton is a college town, with many students moving in and out. The semi-permanent population of people who stay longer than college students may be gayer than the numbers indicate, but of course a lot of the old-timers aren't lesbians.

Counting by zip codes can create problems. One of the commenters on the Atlantic site pointed out that Washington DC's gay neighborhood is split between three zip codes. Also, a lot of gay neighborhoods were formed by yuppies buying into depressed or immigrant neighborhoods, so a few blocks away in the same zip code you may find many very traditional families.

Having grown up in San Francisco, and witnessing first hand the evolution of Haight-Ashbury, the Castro District and the Mission District, I can only marvel at the ingenuity of the reporting, and the manipulation of the numbers. By the way, "Castro" is not a city.

If the Castro District is 14.2 percent, I don't believe it. It's closer to 50%.

If the City of San Francisco is claimed to be 14.2% the number is exaggerated by a factor of 2.

I suspect that family households with one pervert in it, counts the entire family as gay.

NYC having 3 times as many homosexuals living in higher density than San Francisco is not entirely meaningless. The AIDS virus infects twice the percentage of New York gays than it does San Francisco gays. I lived in the SF Bay area for many years and never thought NYC was a gay mecca until my first visit. I was surprised at the density of gays in some areas. The home address percentages don't tell the whole story.
