you know what else those jobs have in common? As service jobs they have no employer paid health benefits, no paid holidays, no paid vacation, no 401K’s or retirement benefits. Thats the problem with service jobs. even if the money is good...nothing else about it is.
MrB cuts my hair and I cut his. Fifteen minutes max, on my time, no gas, no appropriate dress and my wallet remains intact.

You don’t know how lucky you are! I don’t personally know of any men who have sat around crying over a really, REALLY bad haircut. (there’s been a few women that I’ve almost had to talk down off a ledge. LOL). For what it is worth... a marine cut or biker cut is quite handsome on guys. IMHO.
Jamie-our-hairdresser is officially “unemployed”. She’s a never-married mom doing her best, and her son is a very nice boy.

Job security but with a price: Seems like a lot of beauticians die of cancer in their 50’s....must be the chemical exposure.
The electrical contractor’s and plumber’s we know are doing very well. We’re in Texas, but they’ve had NO slow down, whatsoever.
So can funeral directors. They have a recession-proof industry. People continue to die and continue to be buried.

You do pay for school & licensing here in NJ, then you compete with illegals who have neither.
The author completely overlooked that. The biggest threat to service industries like hairdressing isn’t outsourcing or automation, it’s competition from immigrants (legal or illegal) who operate unlicensed establishments and undercut legitimate businesses.
The Potawatomi Indian Tribe helped some...but she did get a small loan too.
She went to a Paul Mitchell school..which wasn't exactly cheap. But way cheaper than a 4 yr college...
She's a good kid, a hard worker.
