A record of 8,733,461 workers took federal disability insurance payments in June 2012, according to the Social Security Administration. That was up from 8,707,185 in May.
There has been a dramatic shrinkage in the United States over the past 20 years in the number of workers actually employed and earning paychecks per worker who is not employed and is taking federal disability insurance payments.
n June 1992, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there were 118,419,000 people employed in the United States, and, according to the Social Security Administration, there were 3,334,333 workers taking federal disability payments. That equaled about 1 person taking disability payments for each 35.5 people actually working.
When President Barack Obama was inaugurated in January 2009, there were 142,187,000 people employed and 7,442,377 workers taking federal disability payments. That equaled about 1 person taking disability payments for each 19.1 people actually working.
n May of this year, there were 142,287,000 people employed, and 8,707,185 workers taking federal disability payments. That equaled 1 worker taking disability payments for each 16.3 people working.
The federal disability payments made to the record 8,733,461 workers in June averaged $1,111.42.
To be eligible for federal disability insurance payments, a person must have worked long enough to have qualified for the benefits and must also meet the Social Security Administration’s definition of “disabled.”

on it...they could not be more than 25..
They are gonna get their freebies any way they can. Over 2 years of unemployment isn’t enough.
I do think that we have to take into account the aging population and the toll that the war has taken on our veterans.
They must not be putting any type of restrictions on disability these days. There is no way this many people should be on disability. It sounds like just another welfare program. I really hope you cannot get both but I would not be surprised. These folks eat better than my family does and don’t have to do anything but just go sign up to loot us.

To receive S.S. disability, you generally have had to work and pay in under S.S. for at least 40 quarters (10 years). Are you thinking of S.S.I.? A whole nother animal, you don't have to have paid in a cent to get that.

we only spend just under $700 billion for the entire military budget... that’s only 6 times more... for people actually doing the job
“Disabilty” is the New Welfare.
I know of a certain individual who moved down here to Florida from New York City - he was a cop (retired), did his 20 yr.
Said he has a bad back & knees so therefore collects SSI disability.
Now - While collecting all this he managed to put himself through the police academy here and works part-time as a Sheriff’s deputy in Suwannee County.
I call it fraud. I’ve thought of turning him in.
Back in the early 70s, I worked for a year and a half as a Social Security claims rep.
At that time, Social Security Disability was probably the most difficult process of any. Just about every one was refused at the first try. You had to be really, really in bad shape.
Just about zero were approved on reconsideration. Most who were approved were done so by an administrative law judge.
I guess it could have changed but I still bet it is not that easy. I will say that those who had an attorney had a much better chance of being approved. They knew exactly what to do and what they were looking for.
I'll get over that in time for the November elections, but it may very well go permanent after that.
We have a close friend on it, under 60 years of age, who has a form of dementia - not Alzheimers, but similar. We helped her with the process of applying for Social Security Disability. Not easy. Lots of hoops to jump through.
The spike is probably due in part to people who have lost their jobs and who could have qualified previously but decided for one reason or another that it was better to work than go on the dole. But when you are disabled, can’t find any job and you are under 62, an option is Social Security Disability.
Another contributing factor also has to be the climb in obesity rates.
One thing I do remember is they didn’t much care what the Dr. said. There were specific items the state agency checked for.
Disability is the new welfare. After their unemployment runs out, million have applied for disability.
Fraud, of course, is rampant.
Food stamps and disability: two programs, IMHO, that need major cuts. And tightened down eligibility.
We have become a welfare nation. SSI has become the natural follow-on to 99 weeks of UI. We have the Federal Government promoting "Food Stamp Parties". We have free "ObamaPhones". SNAP and TANF fill welfare recipients debit cards. TANF can buy beer and cigarettes. Child Medicaid (SCHIP) provides healthcare for adults aged 18 - 26.
Is it any wonder we are running one trillion dollar budget deficits?
We must roll this back.

Food stamps on on track to cost $75 BILLION this fiscal year.
I realize with food stamps there is some double counting, since poor employed people and those on disability can qualify for food stamps.
Does this include VA or not?
I want to see the names of these disability people posted online. Especially those who are getting disability checks for mental illness. Around here we call those checks ‘crazy checks’. I want to know if I have neighbors who are collecting crazy checks.
Disability, welfare cash, food stamps, public housing and WIC.
The end of these programs is going to be a catastrophe for those who haven’t the knowledge to realize they are only slightly better off than slaves by accepting them as a way of life.
