EXAMINING THE FOUNDATION

It was back in 1962, I'm told, when cracks began to appear in the 42nd story of a very expensive high-rise in Hong Kong. It had already withstood numerous typhoons. And there was no ready explanation for the cracks' sudden appearance. Yet there they were. Obviously, there had to be a problem somewhere. So a team of architects and structural engineers was called in to ferret out the cause.

Finally, one determined engineer stumbled upon the reason as he was prowling around the foundations deep in the basement. When he tapped the plaster, he noticed that some parts sounded strangely hollow. So he began systematically chipping away at the covering layer. And soon he had his explanation -- a large number of bricks had been removed from the building's foundation! But, why? Further investigation eventually led to a surprising revelation. It seems that, some years earlier, a night watchman had been building an addition to his house. To save on costs, he had loosened the mortar around a few bricks each night, removed them from the wall, wrapped them in old newspaper, and smuggled them out of the building at the end of his shift. He only took a few at a time. And no one had ever noticed. He didn't think it would make a difference. After all, he had been very careful to fill the breach with plaster. But an engineer could have told him differently. Though it might take years for such cracks to appear, the end result was inevitable once the foundation had been weakened. The building APPEARED sound, but, as is so often the case, an attractive exterior hid a potentially fatal flaw.

As Dr. Harold Sala commented, "...the cracks... don't always appear overnight, but when the foundation is tampered with, inevitably the superstructure will feel the effect." He was talking about family life, but you could just as easily apply those comments to our spiritual development... or to life in the wider community. The Psalmist asked, "If the foundations be destroyed, what can the righteous do?" (Psalm 11:3) And who could forget the story Jesus told about the importance of foundations? (Matthew 7:24)

This week offers another perspective on the topic of "foundations" as millions of Americans celebrate Independence Day. And for those of us who are committed, from a FAITH perspective, to the pursuit of truth and justice, it offers an opportunity to reflect on the healthy ways that faith has often influenced our citizenship. I remember that Earl Warren, who later became chief justice of the Supreme Court, once admitted, "I believe the entire Bill of Rights came into being because of the knowledge our forefathers had of the Bible and their belief in it." Our nation still has many flaws, and has frequently failed to live up to its lofty ideals. But, time and again, it has been our founders' vision of "freedom and justice for all" that has enabled us to overcome divisions and make a "course correction" without anarchy.

. This holiday, Independence Day, offers the opportunity to celebrate that vision, perhaps even to rediscover its religious roots. It was faith, not greed, that led the founders to "...hold these truths to be self evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights." It's a time for reflection and recommitment. A time to (as Isaiah says) "look to the rock from which you were hewn, and to the hole of the pit from which you were dug." (51:1)

We were spared from the power outage. The storms rolled in just before 11:00 last night - things were hopping. I shut the computer down and went upstairs to bed. Was unable to sleep because of the heat and my chest congestion - finally drifted off at about 0500.

Got up late this morning - began to hear about the outages and closures. John was supposed to work from 4:00 to 8:00, but his pool was closed - no power. A little before 4:00 we sallied forth to take David to work (Supermarket)- his store was closed but he still needed to work to salvage perishables, etc. US-1 was open but all of the traffic signals were out - It took us about 20 minutes to get the 3 or four blocks to his store. Lots of trees down - lots of homes damaged. I saw on one website, I can't remember where, that 3.5 million people were out of power. A very bad situation - we're thankful to have power, although I suppose that could change at any time.

Thank you very much, Kathy! Mary is returning 18July, one day before her birthday. I made the flight reservations several days ago. Got a good price, but had to fly her on Turkish Airlines. You wouldn't believe what the "major" airlines are charging!

I didn't rest well last night or today. I'm sick as a dog - I'm on a ten-day course of Augmentin, together with my usual asthma meds. Heavy chest and nasal congestion. I'm hoping for better rest tonight - it's a little cooler than last night. Our A/C works, but when the temp is close to 100 the second floor stays warm.

Wishing The Canteen A Blessed Lord's Day

Almighty and eternal God, Protect our military as they discharge their duties. Protect them with the shield of your strength and keep them safe from all evil and harm.
May the power of your love enable them to return home safely to the people who love them and to the gratitude of the American people.
We ask this through Christ our Lord.

May God Guide And Heal Our Nation

I had a dream
I saw you walking down the road
In a gatherning storm

Wind on the rise
A black crow was flying
You along in a gathering storm

I wake up along in my bed
There's nothing before my eyes
And outside the door
Only the sighing
And you out there in a gathering storm

So cover you head
Keep your eyes open
Make speed in the gathering storm

I rise up and turn on the light
Now it's shining in my window
My walls are strong
My chimney's smoking
God speed you in the gathering storm

Aloha Doc and Night Owl1

Good foundations are what we stand on and they give us a base to build upon.
It's good to hear from you ,Doc! Seems your roof did you well last night and Night Owl, all roofs leak a little....but that's fixable.

WE THE PEOPLE OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances. "

Our Founding Fathers secured this essential freedom against great odds through great adversity. It is under attack now in the defining Constitutional struggle of our times. We are called at this moment to bear Witness, to uphold and to defend this vital and First Freedom – without Freedom of Conscience, we have no Freedom at all!

Good evening, Biglook! A Blessed Lord's Day to you and yours!

Do you remember the Bob Dylan song "The times they are a'changing?"

". . . there's a battle outside raging. It'll soon shake your windows and rattle your doors, for the times, they are a changing!" I've always rejected the message of that song - it's the Anthem of the enemies of America.

There is indeed a battle raging - and it's shaking us violently. We must return to and ratify the basic values upon which this Nation was based and which made us great. Individual liberty, Freedom of Religion - and that means that that misbegotten HHS Mandate has to go - rugged individualism, free enterprise, and the dignity of human life.

There’s a huge amount of sacred music in the classical world. I’ll keep that in mind.

Thank you very much, Meg! A Blessed Lord's Day to you and yours! I can certainly sympathize with those lacking A/C in this kind of heat.

Forty-three years ago, when I was in 'Nam, I was a heat casualty (heat stroke) on a scorching day in June when we were humping up into the hills. Luckily, we came upon a stream with a small pool and I immersed myself. But I have never been able to handle the heat since then.

I can't get comfortable in the couch or loveseat downstairs. Have to sleep in the bed. We need to get another fan for me to use in the bedroom. As long as there's air circulating over me, the heat is bearable.

It can't come soon enough for me, Kathy! I want her out of that part of the World.

I can’t believe I grew up with no A/C in Texas..I cannot imagine life without it now.

My dad built a screened in porch for us..and I slept out on it all summer when I was a child.

We had water coolers or swamp fans later.
