I am far from a Bushbot, but even Eisenhower and Reagan chose Supreme Court justices that turned out far more liberal than initially anticipated. After his terms as President were over, someone asked Eisenhower if he had made any mistakes as President. He replied yes, that two of them (Warren and Brennan) were still serving on the Supreme Court.

Rare are the justices like Thomas and Scalia who stay conservative for the whole of their Supreme Court tenure. Since the New Deal days, social and political pressure in the Washington hothouse tends to move Supreme Court justices, and for that matter, Senators and Representatives leftward. What has happened to Roberts can be seen in the judiciary and Congress for a very long time.
