I wish I could get this in front of Sarah's eyes.
Sarah, it does not matter if we get fired up. It does not matter if we elect Republicans en-masse to the Senate and Congress, and take the White House too.

The fact is, that the SCOTUS has just ruled that it is permissible to force a US citizen to buy a product or service, or face a fine. This will eventually result in Government-decreed cars, Government-decreed food, and even Government-decreed books. This flies in the face of everything that it is to be a free American.

Party control waxes. Party control wanes. But SCOTUS rulings take decades to reverse, on the rare occasions they are reversed at all. All it takes is one bad election, and the government can now decree we must own certain products and services.

Sarah, there is no silver lining here.

Love,

Laz

I posted a similar comment on Facebook, as a comment to the article/post.

Dadgummit Laz. Let’s wait a while and see the end effect of what Roberts has done by swapping votes with Kennedy, writing the MAJORITY opinion, and making this a tax issue.

I think I may see where she is going with this. If I’m correct, there definitely is a silver lining here and she has a hold of it.

(Why are so many conservative FReepers eager to write her off regardless of her continued success? /rhetorical)

Gov. Palin has it right.

Repeal the mandate, or make the fine $1.00 per year, next January through reconciliation. Get that done first. Then peel off a half dozen Senate Democrats to repeal, with sixty votes, the rest of the Act, which by that point doesn't work for anyone.

the SCOTUS has just ruled that it is permissible to force a US citizen to buy a product or service, or face a fine.

Democrats don't need this ability. If some day they have a super-majority, they could just give the people the product or service and tax to pay for it.

This fine-in-lieu of participation was a gambit tailored specifically to give political cover for a government takeover of healthcare. The inability of the vast majority of the population to self-insure for foreseeable risks made this possible. I can't see it as having broader application: car insurance, perhaps.

To repeat a comment I posted elsewhere, the answer will be to elect conservative majorities in both Houses and then make sure they know that we expect the first order of business must be the impeachment and removal from the bench of all Justices who voted for this egregious violation of the Constitution.

They hold their office upon the condition of "good behavior" - a clear statement must be made that ignoring the clear words of the U.S. Constitution is never good behavior!

But SCOTUS rulings take decades to reverse

I would (respectfully) disagree with that. The SCOTUS does not reverse itself. Even the horrible Dred Scott decision was not reversed by the SCOTUS -- a constitutional convention did that.

Heck, even the modern Vatican can say: "sorry" regarding its past treatment of men of science like Galileo, but the SCOTUS just goes on destroying our rights and liberties (Kelo vs New London). No reversals, no "sorrys". Nothing. Just an out of control bunch of people who have the position for life.

ONLY a constitutional convention can correct this mess.
