Good point but the real reason the ‘media’ was so hard on Nixon was his anti-communist actions in the 1950’s. They showed their true colors by coming after him using the Watergate ‘scandal’ in the ‘70s. Nixon gained his first term in the House by beating a woman named Helen Gahagan Douglas, who Nixon described as the ‘pink lady’...not really a red, mind you, just pink, almost a red...the ‘media’ never forgave him.
This is not to say Watergate wasn’t a serious matter, but look at what some of these other tools (Kennedy, Johnson, Clinton, Obama) have gotten away with, with hardly a peep out of the ‘media’...just follow the dots.

Nixon did defeat Helen Gahagan Douglas but that was in the U.S. Senate race for California in 1950.

This is not to say Watergate wasn’t a serious matter,

This is what I mean, two generations of information control and every scandal being called a "gate" and nobody can say anything good about Nixon without that qualifier.
