Hubby’s mother was Swiss, and she told me the tale of a real fondue that she, her hubby, Hubby, and Brother had in Switzerland when they were visiting her relatives there:

In the Swiss tradition, it had a pot of very hot oil and a fondue of melted cheeses like Gruyere and Emmenthaler. The fondue was served with bread cubes, yes, but it also came with raw meat cubes. The meat was cooked in the hot oil, and then dipped into the cheese. The bread just went straight into the cheese.

Hubby’s brother stuck a cube of meat into the hot oil, and when it was cooked, he immediately put it in his mouth, much to the hilarity of Hubby (he was about 17 at the time, Brother was 11) and the horror of their parents.

He didn’t eat fondue for a long time, and did not get a decent meal for two days for the pain in his mouth. The poor little kid.

And he was a Gerber baby, too. He was that cute. True story.
