A few years back when I was in the upper peninsula I noticed that most of the people I encountered in the state and national parks were middle aged whites and Asian groups of families.

I talked to the American guiding the Asians and he told me that he’s from Michigan but has lived in Japan for some 20 years. He said that the Japanese are real nature lovers in a nation with little elbow room. He said he ran a few tours to the Grand Canyon, Yellowstone, Yosemite etc but the Asians liked the more out of the way places that didn’t get huge crowds. He said there was a great market for hunting and fishing for anyone willing to cater to the Japanese.

That’s what i’ve figured about those Chinese tourists. Almost all of them live in areas we’d consider urban. They can come here, stay in cheap motels, ride around in buses and see more unemcumbered real estate in an hour than they could doing the same thing in most of China.

We had three different Japanese exchange students living us years ago. All had grandparents living with them and there was literally no room between homes. The boys were amazed we owned acreage and fascinated with the variety of food available at American grocery stores.
