Whether registered or likely if you want to find a trend line it doesn't matter at all. Now, regarding so-called Independents, those are Democrats who got off the party mailing list.

They must still be presumed to be voting Democrats.

There are, after all, no real independents ~ some part of your life ~ job, geography, relationships, church, social groups ~ is tied up in some way with the great coalition parties we call Democrats or Republicans.
