OTOH, I think sometimes we Tea Partiers despair too much when we don't win every battle. That is wrong, too.
Change takes time...incrementally is often the only way to reach the goal.
You know - I never thought about it but you’re right! You can count on the media ignoring the obvious so that they can keep pretending to the public that the Tea Party is a “fringe group” - especially now that their “pet group” of Occupiers is being exposed as nothing more than lazy criminals and terrorists. Funny how the planned bridge explosion news died the same day it started when it was Occupier organizers who were involved. Had this been Tea Party organizers, we would STILL be reading about it every day and the Tea Party would be all but eliminated as a credible group.
All this fretting about the demise of the moderate republican amuses me. Please find me a moderate democrat. Please, anywhere. Find me a democrats who’s not a socialist.

The tea party completely blew it and got hosed with the presidential primary by not selecting, backing and uniting behind a legitimately small-government (but not Ron Paul wacko) candidate after the 2010 victories.

And that is the BIG problem. People in a bubble for that long loose comprehension of what our government is. They get busy feathering their own nest and do not give two hoots about the rest of us. They also become enamored with the D.C. culture which lives and breathes on tax payer money and big bucks from lobbyists. It sometimes feels like we are living under a big scam run by people who have never had a real job.

Do they not remember what started this? President “We won, Eric”, Nancy Pelosi running her side roughshod over the opposition on that frikking healthcare bill and completely shutting Republicans out of any discussions, all while the so called ‘compromisers’ on our side were in a collective ‘oh dear’ sigh, lamenting the “tone” in Washington?
All the Tea Party did was run and elect candidates that will bring the fight right back to their doorstep with a loud and clear “NO MORE BUSINESS AS USUAL” The hell with the permanent political class.

Unfortunately, Thad is a senator-for-life in the mode of James Eastland and John Stennis. The GOP in Mississippi is very conserative—heck, the few remaining conservative Democrats are in the Magnolia State, too.
But the Mississippi Republican Party is also clubby, with an established pecking order. I just don’t see anyone trying to push Thad aside, given his role as an elder statesman and one of the first Republicans elected to public office in the 20th Century.
If someone were smart, they’d fire Dan Jones, the idiot chancellor of the University of Mississippi and replace him with Thad. The job carries enough money and prestige to attract Mr Cochran’s interest; he has the Washington ties that colleges/universities value and he’d be a much better leader than Dan Jones.
As the GOP grows in MS, it is developing a deep and talented bench. But as long as Thad, Roger Wicker and others hang around, there’s no place for them to go.

My take on these matters is those elected officials who worship at the alter of compromise are more enamoured with the process than with the substantive issues. Large numbers of voters long for candidates who have well defined principles and are willing to take the heat for abiding by their principles. These feelings may not be explicitly articulated, but if you carefully listen to when the average person is given the opportunity to express his or her views it is clear they what principled leaders.

That would have been impossible because there is no such thing as "the TEA party".
There are TEA parties all over the USA , I think there are 40+ registered TEA parties and ten of thousands of divergent members with no real connections, other than a set of common ideas.
I go to TEA party rallies in WPA and we have no real national ties, which is why it is almost impossible for the lefty crazies to defeat us.
We have no single spokesman or leader. It's just us.

Only problem is that true leaders don’t compromise. The equation then becomes you win and they lose.
Now, check out the records of those spineless Republicans running for office and you will find that compromise is the cereal they eat for breakfast. That’s why we find ourselves in the current shape we are now in.

There just wasn't anyone to get behind. The TP didn't blow anything. There just wasn't a viable alternative. Most of our best people are very new on the big stage...first term governors and senators. People can consider Palin as that person, but she would have faced a huge battle to win in the general. She could have done it, but she would have had to reverse public opinion...not easy to do. Other than Romney, the only viable options I can think of are Perry (who blew it), Daniels (who just doesn't have it), Jendal (who blew his opportunity with his terrible debut the 2009 GOP response), or DeMint (who didn't want it).
You have ruined my day by mentioning Trent Lott. I have lived a peaceful and satisfying life over the past years since he was out of office and I didn’t hear his name for years.
But now............I hear it again and my hate index went up 10 points on a scale of 1 to 10 for any and all Republicans who worked with and supported that scumbag.
He is the “bastard” that exemplifies all that is wrong with the Republican party.

Tip O’Neil was a smart politician who did not let the perfect stand in the way of the good. He was smart enough to take what he could get, knowing he would be able to get more later. That kind of “incremental” Liberalism is what has led us to the disastrous situation we find ourselves in today. Lucky for us Harry Reid is too stupid to take what he can get from the mushy moderates in the GOP.
