They were fired because the sheriff tried to curtail their political choices. That's government activism in itself, and so is a judge who claims clicking a [Like] button on Facebook is different than making a comment. Both are government activism at its worst. That was my point and I stand by it.

Without looking at your link... if that is true, then union rules do not defend members from breaking ranks with the Sheriff... what does that tell you?
I know Police Departments are unionized, but I am not so sure that Sheriff’s offices are. Besides that Virginia is a right to work state, so even if a company, or other entity, has unions working for it, you do not have to join the union to work there.
