I'm in favor of applying the law as it is written, not as I might wish it to be.

i am all in favor of that, how about letting some write the law that isn't trying to make it totally undecipherable?

Laws are largely written by lawyers, for lawyers.

Ten laws were all God commanded, the people demanded much more. Always a what if.
