Newt Gingrich, the colorful former House speaker and fiery partisan, formally exited the Republican presidential contest Wednesday and vowed to help Mitt Romney's bid to defeat President Barack Obama. Ending a campaign that seesawed between implosion and frontrunner and back again, Gingrich threw his support to his one-time rival as expected and promised his supporters he would continue to push conservative ideas. Gingrich bowed out of the race more than $4 million in debt and his reputation perhaps damaged.
"Today, I am suspending the campaign. But suspending the campaign does not mean suspending citizenship," Gingrich told a hotel ballroom in suburban Washington.
"We are now going to put down the role of candidate and candidate's spouse and take back the role of active citizens," he said, adding he would continue to promote conservative ideas on college campuses, as well as through newsletters and films.
He also urged conservatives to rally behind Romney as a better alternative than Obama.
"This is not a choice between Mitt Romney and Ronald Reagan. This is a choice between Mitt Romney and the most radical, leftist president in American history," Gingrich said.

So what would it take to make a viable, third party, Tea Party run? Too late for 2012? Anyone have an extra $ Billion laying around?
That, and a complicit national media.
Yep. One Billion means nothing if the media’s cameras ignore you. Which they do to conservatives.. Often.
It's not just that, either. It's bigger than that. In my mind... it's about Napolitano, Holder, Clinton, Panetta etc. The whole crew needs to go.
Unfortunately Mitt Romney doesn’t have a snowball’s chance in hell of defeating his slightly darker ideological brother.

OK, so now there is technically only one candidate - so what does that mean for the rest of the states’ primaries and caucuses? Do they still have them now? With only 1 candidate?
Does this mean that he will instruct his delegates, such as they are, to vote for Romney on the first vote? The article is not clear on this.
I have kept quiet about Newt for the past few months, but it must be said that what he mostly accomplished was to siphon votes from Rick, who was a pretty steady second once he came back into the running.
I’m not blaming anyone for supporting Newt, although I was pretty annoyed about the way so many people attacked Rick, using left wing lies from the media. Possibly Romney could have been stopped if Newt had thrown his support behind Rick when it became obvious that he had no chance of winning. Too late for that, now.
But I do wish he would hang on to his delegates, such as they are, until we we are sure where we stand at the convention. It’s not over till it’s over. But if he hands over the delegates now, that will pretty much kill any slight chance of heading Romney off at the pass.
It is such a sad shame that we have narrowed down our choices to the LIBERAL! This is insane for the republican party to put a Massachusetts liberal at the head of the party then expect conservatives to follow him. Newt is much more of a statesman than me. I would have to let Romney win/lose on his own doings after the lies that he told about me (Newt). The hit pieces will keep on to hurt the few conservatives out in the fight.
I hope everyone who said anyone but Obama is totally satisfied to where they put us at. Those people caved in and followed the TV jive. Romney has a blank check; he can do no wrong (another Obama) Even we had a chance to reject the liberal in Tampa and threw it away- too many were judgmental over Newt. Too old, too over weight, too visionary with too big of ideas, embarrassed the party by impeachment hearings, or sat with Nancy to do a commercial, they taunt. And they think the other men/women in DC do not have affairs and do much more. There is so much in which goes on there.
Newt has accomplished more than any of those politicians who only care about one thing-their careers and lifestyles as the agenda driven media gets away with more damage to the American traditional values. Sorry, Newt, not supporting the liberal. Don’t trust him. And you best not trust them all the way, Newt. The people at the Hill have it out for you from what I hear. And, hope I never see the spoiler Rick santos again whom gave this to Romney.
I draw the line at supporting the father of the theft of my freedom: Romney0bamaCare.
Y’all can support Romney all you want, but don’t come a-complianin’ when he steals more and more of your freedom.
He’s shown you that he’s perfectly happy to do so. He will be back for more of your freedom until it’s gone. There is no evidence that says he won’t.
He still LOVES RomneyCare. Theft. Slavery.
Enjoy your new Slavemaster, RomneyBots!
Sorry, but I could see that Rick Santorium was a bit weak from the very start and somehow knew he would not make it through to the convention if it were brokered. How I wish that we’d end up with a brokered convention and a Newt/Santorium ticket or a Newt/Ryan ticket replace whatever the Romney/____ ticket will be.
I want tank strength in the whitehouse...not wimps as the world is watching..
OK, so now there is technically only one candidate -
I guess we may discount Ron Paul but ‘technically’ he’s still in the race and on the ballots. Most of the other candidates will be on the ballot even though they have suspended because of previous election preperation deadlines.
Exactly. I've been telling everyone I talk to, that the choice isn't between Obama and Romney because they work for the same masters, and are in foursquare agreement on the same agenda.
No - there are two choices, but the choice is not between the respective nominees. The real choice is between giving ones grudging (or groveling) support to the corrupt and suppressive ruling class, or RESISTING TYRANNY.
There is no other real choice.
So that’s officially an endorsement for Romney
Sorry Newt - you were done after your FL moon condo speech
I guess I have the same plan as I did with Dole vs. Clinton and McCain vs. Obama.
I voted for the most libertarian (small "L") candidate I could find and was proud of it. Too late to launch a 3rd-party candidate and too late to continue to put up with the machinations of the establishment Republicans.
Not too late to vote against both the current officeholder and the "loyal opposition" Republicans who created this conundrum.
[T]here are two choices, but the choice is not between the respective nominees. The real choice is between giving ones grudging (or groveling) support to the corrupt and suppressive ruling class, or RESISTING TYRANNY. There is no other real choice.
" No bastard ever won a war by dying for his country. He won it by making the other poor dumb bastard die for his country. "
He talked about how conservatives aren't going to sit back and take it anymore. He talked about the long-range vision and strategy of the liberals; he talked about how the Democrat party was not our folks' Democrat party, that it had become much different. He talked about what Obama is, what he represents in accomplishment for that twisted party.
This is a FACT: Romney has a documented record to illustrate his political expansion of the same leftist guiding principles as Obama and crew, on FIVE major issues: global warming cap-and-trade regulation, government-run health care, on-demand abortion, appointment of liberal activist judges to rationalize illegal "law," and the forcing of the homosexual agenda on Americans and their military, the military where their kids may serve someday.
Romney most certainly bastardizes the Republican party as Obama and his ilk have bastardized the Democrat party of our parents' generation.
Every argument to vote for Romney is built on the rattling and shaking of big bigga-boos, and the making of loud noises to frighten voters into voting FOR a guy who is a walking example of the liberal Republican who betrays all the reasons we vote Republican in the first place.
All you folks who think Romney would offer a chance -- take the time to look at him closely. You think of him as a feather that blows in the wind. God forbid he wins, you will think of him as an iron fist in the most velvety Republican glove. You understand how easily progressivism and its tyranny fits Romney philosophically. If you've been paying attention to Romney's tactics and circle for the past five years, you perceive that he's ruthless and arrogant. He regards those who doubt him as child-like, children, beneath him. That is how he regards me and you, and you had better understan that is is how he would regard fellow Republicans who are conservatives: as backward children.
Breitbart pretty much falls flat when it comes to explaining how a people who "aren't going to take it anymore" should voluntarily, passionately, angrily, vote FOR a guy who's actively been on the wrong side for all of his political career.
This isn't a vote against the Democrat. It's so ironic because Breitbart knows the enemy: it is liberalism. Romney is a liberal. That he happens to be Republican is Part II of the 2008 primary; we all know how he got there. Breitbart is advocating Einstein's Defenition of Insanity.
I don't like it any better than you do, D-fendr, but just because I don't like it doesn't mean it isn't the truth. Voting for Romney is as nuts as voting for Obama; it's gotten to the point where voting Republican requires me to vote against my own self-interest morally and fiscally.
Common sense MUST prevail. People make stupid choices when they're panicked and scared, and panic and fear are THE ONLY marketing tools of Romney. PAY ATTENTION.
Thanks very much for your reply.
I agree with Breitbart on how critical it is to remove this regime and how we must do so - the last couple of minutes of the video. I agree with Newt on this also, and Mark Levine and Rush also.
Yes, this is an appeal to authority, but it’s what I agree with also.
I most certainly understand your feelings and views, but I think the stakes are too high now. The primary mission in this campaign is to remove the regime from power.
Again, thank you for your courteous and thoughtful reply.
I'm disappointed in them. I fully expect to be disappointed in Palin when/if she gets on the pro-Romney ABO bandwagon.
The very reason that people have to be panicked and frightened into voting for Romney, reveals their native common sense. You damned right folks like you and others here who agree with Breitbart, bridle and acknowledge Romney's flaws. You feel you have no other choice, though all your instincts rebel. COMMON SENSE is telling you that voting for a liberal is voting stupid. Fear is squelching common sense among Republicans and conservatives.
Newt was wrong on Scozzafava -- and he's wrong in the same way now. As Doughty One put it, Romney is "a bridge too far." See my homepage if you think finding myself in the position of parting ways with Newt, Levin, and Rush is unfamiliar. Peer pressure -- and that's what it is -- is peer pressure, that's all.
We disagree even though we have the same goals for the republic.
I’ve said before this argument can be simplified to two sides: One thinks the other underestimates how bad Obama will be; one thinks the other side underestimates how bad Romney will be.
One think Romney is a bridge too far; the other thinks the stakes are too high not to remove this regime from power.
Thanks very much for your discussion.
Well, I'm not going to sit through the video of an entire speech just to get the point of your response - whatever it was.
Oh, for crying out loud. Don’t post a link to a transcript of someone else’s speech. Just post your own viewpoint.
1 ) Posting certain viewpoints is verboten here.
2) If yo’ve never heard Andrew Breitart’s speech, it’s worth the time.
S/B you’ve..
Nothing that Andrew Breitbart ever uttered is verboten here. If you agree with him, then just spill it. What's your view?
FR has made it VERY clear that we are not to support Romney - even if that means Obama is reelected.
It will be interesting to see how things unfold over the coming months. If the forum is NOT going to back the Republican candidate then what is their left to talk about?
Is Newt going to ‘help’ him or ‘steer’ him...mittens needs a bunch of steering.
Mittens must win - then we’ll ‘Tea Party’ his azz
“So what would it take to make a viable, third party, Tea Party run? “
So, you are hoping to let Obama win with 43% of the vote this year, just like Clinton won in 1992?
And the benefit of letting Obama win this way is ..... ?????
A very small contingent of Freepers would rather see 0bama for 4 more years instead of Romney.
Shocking. Really.
No matter how they bury their heads in the sand and shout, stick their fingers in their ears, and shout, “nah, nah, nah, I can’t hear you.”
It will be either Romney or 0bama.
As of right now that is the choice. One or the other.
Romney will allow conservatives the chance to fight another day?
0bama? Forget it.
You obviously don't understand the rationale behind Jim Rob's policy. Once again, here it is...
There are NO substantial differences between Romney and Obama. They're both employees of the same globalist, America-hating, ruling class Socialists. The only things separating them are their team jerseys.
This is a conservative forum. Check the founder's Mission Statement for clarification, if you have any confusion on that point. Given that this isn't a Republican party forum, its aims and purposes are in alignment with those of the Framers and our Founding Documents.
Hence, this group has principles to guide it. Principles that don't include supporting big government liberals of any stripe. Especially those who also have bent over backwards to conspire with our political enemies in their quest to undermine every pillar of our traditions and culture.
“I most certainly understand your feelings and views, but I think the stakes are too high now. The primary mission in this campaign is to remove the regime from power.”
Correct.
Romney may be no more conservative than the non-conservative Eisenhower was (one of his favorite Presidents). Well, there’s a huge gap between Eisenhower and Obama. Anyone not seeing this is not thinking straight.
"There are two paths! There are two paths! One is America, the other is Occupy! One is America, the other is Occupy! And I don't care, and along the way... I've realized over the last three years that the Republican Party and the conservative movement is not what ABC, CBS and NBC put on the screen.and he makes it clear this is so even if we are not satisfied with our candidate."They try to portray you in the worst possible light... and when I travel around the United States meeting people in the Tea Party who care -- black, white, gay, straight -- anyone that's willing to stand next to me to fight the progressive left, I will be in that bunker..."
Again, if you've never watched it, it's worth it when you have some time, only 16 minutes or so.
” - - - So what would it take to make a viable, third party, Tea Party run? “
In order for a third party to be viable, the election rules would have to change to allow a runoff between the two leading contenders.
Otherwise there would be the usual boo-hooing about “splitting” or “throwing away” ones vote.
An achievable scenario in 2012 is to
1.) boycott voting for Romney by voting for ABO (Anybody But Romney) in the remaining Primary elections;
2.) work and lobby for an Open Convention in Tampa;
and 3.) DRAFT Sen. Jim DeMint, R-Sc., to be the Republican Presidential Nominee.
BTW, Jim “says” that he doesn’t want to run, “at this time.”
If you live in a deep-blue state, e.g., CA, NY, then you can vote for who ever you please as it wont make a difference. But, you can still donate effectively as that method of support knows no bounds. On the other hand, if you live in a GW Bush 2004 state that went into the 0bama column in 2008, then you have the duty. 0bama must be defeated; take one for the team.
So, I pray that voting a straight Republican ticket below the line for president is enough to end-around the current dictator's executive orders and czars. I would like to hear some more rhetoric on this. Contemplating another four year march toward Marxism and Boehner’s lack of leadership has left me cold and shaking when pondering the future of our country.
Counting on the great minds of FR to elaborate further on the steps we can take toward November.
I just hope and pray that you've made your peace with God because it's going to continue to get uglier and uglier with each passing day.
JMHO
Oh... And before some bonehead tries to tell me that romney will beat obomba just remember... McCain.
I am over here shaking my head..... Newt endorses Mittens and even wants to help get him elected and a bunch you are still singing the Newt praises.
So it doesn’t matter what someone does or what someone says just his spin matters even though it does not match his actions and that makes them a good republican candidate for president? Flippin sad beyond belief.
