As we move into the general election campaign, with Mitt Romney facing Barack Obama in the presidential race, its important not to lose perspective on the very real differences between the two. That starts with the recognition that Obama has made some astonishingly ill-conceived decisions as president, and that Romney would never have done these things.
During a partys nominating process for president of which I was a part on the Republican side in this cycle candidates do everything they can to differentiate themselves from each other. As the candidates focus on these differences and the media plays up the resulting conflicts, you could almost get the impression that some of us would have preferred Obama to some of our fellow Republicans.
Please!
Not only do I prefer Romney over Obama, its not even close. This is not to say that every proposed policy of Romneys is exactly what I would propose. But in stepping back and looking at the big picture, you have to recognize that the next presidents task will be to fix enormous problems. You would want the new president, above all else, to be someone who would never have been so foolish as to make the decisions that a) created the problems; or b) made them worse.
Here are nine examples:
Mitt Romney would never have thrown $862 billion down a rat hole, claiming it to be economic stimulus that would keep unemployment from rising above 8 percent. Then, three years later when unemployment was still struggling to get back down below 8 percent, he would never be so brazen as to claim such a move had actually been successful.
Mitt Romney would never have signed ObamaCare into law. I know some think otherwise because the plan he implemented as governor of Massachusetts had some similar elements. But ObamaCare was sold to the public with blatantly dishonest numbers and hidden taxes, and rammed through Congress via a series of political giveaways that would embarrass the most shameless of con artists. Whatever your disagreements with the structure of MassCare, Romney would never have done any of that. And if an ObamaCare repeal reaches Romneys desk, he will sign it.
Mitt Romney would never have exploded the deficit to more than $1 trillion a year, then allowed his Treasury Secretary tell the chairman of the House Budget Committee, regarding plans to fix the problem, We dont have a definitive solution, but we know we dont like yours.
Mitt Romney would not be running around claiming that businesses need to pay more in taxes. He would not try to tell CEOs what to do with their cash reserves (although he could do so much more competently than Obama, since unlike the president he actually knows a lot about business), because he knows that is not the presidents job. He understands that businesses are the ones who create jobs, and the last thing we need when the economy is struggling to create jobs is to increase the tax burden on businesses.
Mitt Romney would not attack people for being successful. He would not encourage the middle class to resent successful people, but instead would encourage them to learn from those who have been successful, and to seek opportunities from them.
Mitt Romney would never have promised the Russians he would give them what they want on missile defense as soon as he didnt have to worry about those pesky voters anymore.
Mitt Romney would never have stonewalled efforts to make crucial energy supplies available to Americans, as Obama has done on everything from the Keystone XL pipeline to the opening of domestic oil supplies in offshore locations and in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.
Mitt Romney would never have let Congress get away with not passing a budget at all for three years, while running up the nations credit card at unprecedented levels through a series of continuing resolutions that escape the light of public scrutiny.
Mitt Romney would never have blamed someone else for the continued impact of problems he was elected to fix as Obama does endlessly.
This list could go on, but these nine are the some of the biggest things and the big things matter most of all. Everyone involved with a primary campaign hopes their party will nominate the absolute perfect candidate, and when your guy doesnt make it (or for some of us like me, when you dont make it), you can fall into thinking that all is lost. There are actually people running around saying there is no difference between Romney and Obama.
People. Get a grip. The differences are huge. And it starts with understanding how many truly horrendous decisions Barack Obama has made since he took office, and recognizing that Mitt Romney is a man with solid experience and good judgment and that he would never have made any of them.
That alone offers a compelling argument for sending President Obama an invitation to the inauguration of Mitt Romney on January 20, 2013. I trust he will attend.
RINOmney is a vapid dork.
The Cretin-in-Chief is a fellonious vapid quota baby Chicago hood no talent dork.
Not much diff - when you’re considering both of their dorkiness factors.
Thats impossible. I’ve repeatedly read here that there is no difference between the two.

Not entirely convinced? I don't believe anything Romney says, and repealing ObamaCare seems like one of his comments most likely to disappear once the Etch-a-Sketch is shaken or the votes are taken. I'll vote for Romney - in 2016 - if he wins in 2012 and proves that I'm wrong about him. I don't think that is going to happen. Romney is simply Obama with an "R" after his name and a whole lot less hatred for America and everything American. That is not enough to earn my vote.
Mr. Cain is quite the in-depth thinker and has many solid arguments, it is a pity he dropped out. As for Gov. Romney, were Obamacare presented to him as a business endeavor instead of a legislative one, I believe he would get the point and make the right call on killing it.
As to the thesis of Mr. Cain's publication, I think it would be quite beneficial to compile a verifiable, non-emotional list of Pres. Obama's decisions that have been enacted either via Executive Order or his agenda items passed through the legislative process that are detrimental to these United States as well as our partners abroad (i.e. Israel). This would prove useful in refuting liberal mantras as well as educating those who are casual voters.
See post #4.
Thanks, pal.

Based on what evidence? I see no reason to believe Mitt has any core conservative values. Why wouldn’t Mitt follow the zeitgeist and blow money and trample freedom like he did on his Socialist RomneyCare?
/johnny
Agreed; I would have liked to see Cain win the nomination, and honestly I think he dropped out too soon.
As to Obama’s decisions, have you seen http://www.nachumlist.com?
I might make it "ten", and add that Romney would not have reduced our military and our nukes to such dangerously low levels.
(And, just for good measure, Romney would return the bust of Winston Churchill to the Oval Office.)

I think the old standby definitions of who votes for which party have been blown away in this campaign. I think people recognize that Im not a partisan Republicanthat Im someone who is moderate, and that my views are progressive.
-Mitt Romney (2002)
Video of the quote:

Obama continued: I am somebody who is no doubt progressive. I believe in a tax code that we need to make more fair. I believe in universal health care. I believe in making college affordable. I believe in paying our teachers more money. I believe in early childhood education. I believe in a whole lot of things that make me progressive.

Cain certainly would have been better than Romney. But the more I followed him, the less sure I was about what he really stood for. Would he oppose gay marriage? Would he be prolife in action and not just in words?
I’m afraid all this really means is that Cain has fallen back into the GOP-e.
Cain is a reasonable man.
I do not believe Romney is evil enough to lie so openly and not care if you believe him or not. I believe that if he lies, he’s trying to look good and he wants you to believe him. Obama flips us off either mentally or actually and lies in our faces and dares us.
I believe mitt Romney is probably a guy who believes in the United States of America. That’s not a great pro argument but at least he is not an anti-American commie.
Oh well. When Clinton got elected I discovered that my life had changed NOT ONE IOTA. After that, I cared less.
Romney is an American in name only. He’d just as soon enslave us, only even slower than Obama.
I'm voting Romney!
I guess you need to be zotted for posting such a pro-Romney article!
Let me know when you find a conservative Democrat nominee.
Nine horrendous Romney decisions:
1) Signed RomneyCare into law (which became the basis for ObamaCare).
2) Still brags about, advocates for and lies about RomneyCare as a “conservative solution.” Google “Reagan on compulsory health insurance” for the truth about RomneyCare programs.
3) Advocated that abortion should be safe and legal in America for three decades of his adult life and only “changed his mind” just in time to campaign for the presidency.
4) Claimed that Roe v Wade is settled law and should be defended as same.
5) Appointed liberal judges.
6) Advocated for gun control. Signed gun bans into law.
7) Supported TARP, still says it was a good idea.
8) Supported Obama’s nearly trillion dollar stimulus spending package, says more may be necessary. Supported the debt limit increase, you can bet he’ll say more will be necessary.
9) Supported government bailouts and the takeover of GM. Says they are good ideas.
But we can go on all day about Romney’s liberal/progressive anti-liberty, pro-culture of death, pro-gay agenda record.
Oh yeah, and then has the audacity to lie that he’s “always been pro-life and quite frankly, all of my positions have been conservative” even though he was determined to run to the left of Ted Kennedy on gay rights and his state was the first to implement gay marriage—under his watch; and his “conservative” socialist/subsidized/forced/mandated health care program funds $50 abortions (taxpayer funds) and has planned parenthood sitting on its death panels; and he famously denied Ronald Reagan, “I was an independent during the time of Reagan-Bush, I’m not returning to Reagan-Bush!”
The lying bastard loathes conservatism, loathes Reagan and loathes the tea party.
And he still pushes amnesty and global warming.
There is nothing conservative or even Republican about the lying liberal/progressive Romney!!
FUMR!!
And as an American, it’s your right to object to Romney and even to vote against him. But to paraphrase Thomas Sowell (you know, one of those RINOs), the Reagan card isn’t in this deck.
You are a brazen hussy. Shame on you.
What has Thomas Sowell done lately that’s progressive?
I will not vote for a man with Romney’s liberal/progressive, abortionist, homosexualist, statist record. Period.
Remember, I am for you, not against you. Just asking the question since ether of the above options re-elects BHO.
“What has Thomas Sowell done lately thats progressive?”
Nothing, to my knowledge— I was being ironic. Sowell, like many conservatives (myself included), supported Herman Cain and later Newt Gingrich in this election cycle. But he’s also pointed out that expecting a reprise of Reagan (or whoever is the latest Purity Test Conservative) is unrealistic.
Let me know when the GOP becomes conservative.
/johnny
Yes, I’d also like to know the answer to that question.
Running Mitt "I like Obama" Romney is what is going to get Obama reelected.
Do you have an argument beyond ad hominem?
No, it is Republican establishment that pushed Romney and some conservatives falling for and capitulated to the Republican GOP’s mantra that only “Romney can win”.
It is not people who are not voting for Romney that guarantee BHO’s victory it is people that voted for Romney in the primaries that are guaranteeing BHO’s victory.
Nine horrendous Obama decisions Mitt Romney would never have made,
___________________________________
Maybe not
but Willie Mitty has at least ten of his own
Just like they got Obama elected by running McCain.
And you just keep enabling them to move left. Because they know they can count on your frightened, mindless vote for any R they put up.
/johnny
Not for you.
I am voting straight conservative. Urge everyone who loves life and liberty to do the same. Praying the tea party rebellion continues in November and beyond. We need to have as many liberty loving conservatives voted into as many seats of local, state and federal offices as possible to resist the liberal/progressive/statists who now hold power. If we can continue building on our tea party majority at all levels of government then perhaps we can start turning the federal beast and make steps in restoring our constitutional limits on government, returning the power to the states and the people and restoring our inalienable rights!! If we have super majorities we may even be able to impeach some of the treasonous presidents and constitution bending supreme court justices and imprison some of the corrupt, crony capitalist lords of congress!!
Giving in to the statist Romney simply dilutes our tea party message. It sends a message to the GOP-e that the conservative wing of the Republican base is not really serious about its conservative causes and will be emboldened to move even further to the left.
We are the resistance!!
Never give in, never give up, never surrender!!
We do not retreat, we reload!!
Aww, that’s no fun. Aren’t you even going to go back through my posting history and find some alleged endorsement of Romney and/or Satan?
Why did I ever donate money to Cain? I’ve removed myself from his mailing list. It’s the least I could do.
Please keep your angry, name-calling six year old off the computer when logged into FR...
Somehow, I expected that there would be discussion and not ad hominem attacks under the guise of disagreement.
Cain is not my definition of rebellion as he picks through nine shades of lipstick to put on this piglit, Rommell.
Would rather he focus on Rommell’s record of damage to capitalism, his affinity for Marxist individual mandates, his own assault on Catholic hopitals and institutions in MA by boxing them in with the forced cooperation with abortion mandates stuck in his Romneycare production, his sign off on queers usurping the sacred contract of marriage.
Rommell has created the template for the now national demise of religious liberty, and capitalism, and we’re going to vote for him, because we are skeered of the alternative? Not a chance.
We know a fleece when we see one.
Personally, I can’t imagine cooperating with evil as even a remote pathway to Heaven, not to mention expecting earthly Peace & Safety to really appear because we’re scared and will vote for Rommell. What kind of vote is that?
Where is that scripture when I need it. The one about the trade off?
What will be left when the sure outcome will be sure apostasy to justify our cowardice in voting for the template of the evil we fear?
BTW, I am expounding not to you, my friend, just expounding the truth as I read it, and as I read it, somewhere. :)
/johnny
Are you planning to vote in the Presidential contest? If yes, for whom?
I can’t support Paul. He’s a blame America first truther.
He’s also a nut along the lines of Alex Jones.
Paul needs to return to the Libertarian party where he belongs and stop trying to split the Republican ticket.
I thought most Pautards were zotted from FR weeks ago.
” ... Romney would never have done these things.
I love the smell of Romney flop-sweat.
There was zero name calling. Read it again. To describe the actions of a coward who enables the template for evil policies, such as Rommell, is not actually calling said person a fool or a coward.
Just a brief tutorial. Name calling is quite exact. The description of actions and thinking and the absence of profanity in describing actions and thinking is not
“adhomenim attacks, or “name calling”.
As I have said before, there is not much hide the hiney around here on FR, and if the shoe fits........
Peace and security voting turns my stomach, personally.
I read that somewhere, and what it leads to. It will lead eventually to apostasy. It has to, in order to justify cowardice voting against one’s conscience, signifying the failure to stand up and vote a Christian conscience and the lack of trust in God for the rest.
You be better off to hang in Proverbs with some actual conviction, and not so much fear.
REBELLION IS TOO DAMN HARD, AND IT’S SCARY.
Definitely agree w this rundown. The worst that Romney is, is a liberal while Obama is a hardcore socialist and saboteur of jobs and industry.
For the first time since the primary campaigns started, I heart Herman Cain.
That was a great statement.
You go, Herman.
