~ Hall of Heroes ~ Leroy A. Mendonca Info from here. |
|
Leroy A. Mendonca was born in Honolulu, Territory of Hawaii, on 2 August 1932, and is of Portuguese ancestry. While attending President William McKinley High School, he was a AJROTC cadet, and graduated in 1950 as a soldier in the United States Army during the Korean War. He posthumously received the Medal of Honor for his actions on July 4, 1951. |
Rank and organization: Sergeant, U.S. Army, Company B, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division Place and date: Near Chich-on, Korea, July 4, 1951 Entered service at: Honolulu, T.H. Birth: Honolulu, T.H. G.O. No.: 83, September 3, 1952 Citation:
Sgt. LeRoy A. Mendonca, distinguished himself by conspicuous gallantry above and beyond the call of duty in action against the enemy. After his platoon, in an exhaustive fight, had captured Hill 586, the newly won positions were assaulted during the night by a numerically superior enemy force. When the 1st Platoon positions were outflanked and under great pressure and the platoon was ordered to withdraw to a secondary line of defense, Sgt. Mendonca voluntarily remained in an exposed position and covered the platoon's withdrawal. Although under murderous enemy fire, he fired his weapon and hurled grenades at the onrushing enemy until his supply of ammunition was exhausted. He fought on, clubbing with his rifle and using his bayonet until he was mortally wounded. After the action it was estimated that Sgt. Mendonca had accounted for 37 enemy casualties. His daring actions stalled the crushing assault, protecting the platoon's withdrawal to secondary positions, and enabling the entire unit to repel the enemy attack and retain possession of the vital hilltop position. Sgt. Mendonca's extraordinary gallantry and exemplary valor are in keeping with the highest traditions of the U.S. Army.
In 2001, the Bob Hope-class roll on roll off vehicle cargo ship USNS Mendonca was commissioned in the Military Sealift Command, and named in honor of Sergeant Mendonca. |
Please remember the Canteen is here to honor, support and entertain our troops and their families. This is a politics-free zone! Thanks for helping us in our mission! |

Aloha, Hawaii...((HUGS))...a good chat with your mainlanders today? Any hint of sun? Little wahine visitors?
Not quite a bright blue sky, but a lovely day with lots of melting going on...no more ice chipping for me! We may just have passed the freezing at night barrier.

A Heart Of Gratitude
April 16, 2012
My boyhood hero was American frontiersman Davy Crockett. In the book David Crockett: His Life and Adventures, Davy encounters a beautiful sight that causes him to launch into praise to the Creator. The writer describes it this way: Just beyond the grove there was another expanse of treeless prairie, so rich, so beautiful, so brilliant with flowers, that even Colonel Crockett, all unaccustomed as he was to the devotional mood, reined in his horse, and gazing entranced upon the landscape, exclaimed, O God, what a world of beauty hast Thou made for man! And yet how poorly does he requite Thee for it! He does not even repay Thee with gratitude. Crockett recognized that the Creators handiwork demands a response of thankfulnessa response that is often neglected or ignored.
The psalmist wrote, The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament shows His handiwork (Ps. 19:1). Gods handiwork is a spectacle that, rightly understood, should not only take our breath away but should inspire us to worship and praise our God as it did the psalmist.
Davy Crockett was rightencountering the wonders of Gods creation should inspire, at the least, a heart of gratitude. Are we grateful?
Across the expanse God stretched out His creation
Established the stars, gave the earth its foundation;
His strength claims our worship, His power our fear;
Yet Calvarys cross sets us free to draw near. Gustafson
Gods glory shines through His creation.
Read: Psalm 19:1-6

Aloha again Night Owl! ((HUGS))
Haven't called back to the mainland yet but will shortly. I'm a little disappointeed this weekend since 'Tana and my son and I went over to the piers to see if we could visit the Navy ship that comes in every year during the Merrie Monarch Festival. I took my son on tours for ten years before 9/11....and he wanted to continue the tradition.
We couldn't visit and USS Crommelin sailed this morning on the tide.
I'll chatting with another Night Owl shortly, Aunt Gloria.

Good evening, Kathy!
*HUGS*
Great to see you this evening!
We're busting buttons at Castle MacNessa this evening - my 15 y/o son John Man qualified as a lifeguard earlier this evening. He stuck with an arduous day of swimming, simulated rescues and testing despite an intense headache. I think there may be Marine material in there!
