VP: Chavez's 2nd radiation treatment 'successful'

CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) -- Venezuela's vice president says Hugo Chavez's second cycle of radiation treatment was successful.

Elias Jaua says Chavez plans to return to Venezuela on Wednesday after receiving treatment in Cuba.

I endured 3000 rads...300 rads at a time. The linear accelerator was aimed between my sternum and public bone with a 3 inch thick lead aperture to shape the beam so it didn't destroy my kidneys. Blood tests preceded each treatment to ensure I had enough functional marrow in my spine/pelvis to survive another round. About 30 minutes after treatment, a slimy metallic taste arrives in your mouth. For the next 4 to 6 hours, you puke into a bucket. Around 1200 rads into the total, all the hair disappeared off my stomach and diarrhea took hold as the lining of my colon was damaged by the radiation.

Suffice to say, it is no picnic. Success was evaluation by performing a lymphangiogram that involved pumping iodine dye from the lymph channels on each foot all the way to my neck. That took about 3 hours. Checks were made with a fluoroscope on the way. High resolution X rays followed to check for lymph channel blockages. None found. The ultimate "success" is being alive 27 years after the experience.

Success in the sense that the remaining cancel cells are now somewhat immune to radiation, and ready to come back and multiply with a vengeance.
