NBC to do ‘internal investigation’ on Zimmerman segment
washington post ^ | By Erik Wemple

Posted on 03/31/2012 8:40:58 PM PDT by DeaconBenjamin

NBC told this blog today that it would investigate its handling of a piece on the “Today” show that ham-handedly abridged the conversation between George Zimmerman and a dispatcher in the moments before the death of Trayvon Martin. A statement from NBC:

“We have launched an internal investigation into the editorial process surrounding this particular story.”

Great news right there. As exposed by Fox News and media watchdog site NewsBusters, the “Today” segment took this approach to a key part of the dispatcher call:

Zimmerman: This guy looks like he’s up to no good. He looks black.

Here’s how the actual conversation went down:

Zimmerman: This guy looks like he’s up to no good. Or he’s on drugs or something. It’s raining and he’s just walking around, looking about.

Dispatcher: OK, and this guy — is he black, white or Hispanic?

Zimmerman: He looks black.

The difference between what “Today” put on its air and the actual tape? Complete: In the “Today” version, Zimmerman volunteered that this person “looks black,” a sequence of events that would more readily paint Zimmerman as a racial profiler. In reality’s version, Zimmerman simply answered a question about the race of the person whom he was reporting to the police. Nothing prejudicial at all in responding to such an inquiry.

In an appearance on Fox News’s “Hannity,” Brent Bozell, president of the conservative Media Research Center, called this elision on the part of ”Today” an “all-out falsehood” — not just a distortion or misrepresentation.

And it’s a falsehood with repercussions. Much of the public discussion over the past week has settled on how conflicting facts and interpretations call into question whether Zimmerman acted justifiably or criminally.

Zimmerman doesn’t have the deeep pockets GM has to force NBC into a two and a half minute apology on the air like in the Dateline NBC exploding truck story, but hopefully he can get something put of it.

..that ham-handedly abridged the conversation between George Zimmerman and a dispatcher

???

Is "ham-handedly" a new way of saying, "maliciously and slanderously"?
"Ham-handedly"? Really?

What's to investigate? They intended to mislead the listener, and succeeded. The lie is out the door, and that's all that matters.

Claiming to be doing an internal investigation is nothing more than a show, with the objective of sustaining the myth that the media is objective.

They can internally investigate all they want, but they will never admit they are not objective - and the facts show they are not objective. Man behind the curtain.

-- Isn't this sort of thing frowned upon by the FTC? This is no error. It sounds like it was done purposefully in order to deceive...basically a FRAUD. --

FTC doesn't care, the media isn't advertising a product, and it cannot promise truth.

You can file letters with your local station. These are reviewed by the FCC at re-licensing time. Explain why you thing the station should lose its license. It has a duty to operate for the public good. Or, just turn them off. They need viewers to survive as a business.

Liars.

it is good to know that Mr. Zimmerman will be able to settle very large lawsuits against these liars to make up for the trauma that subject him to now.

NBC makes me ill. Early on, they reported Zimmerman’s workplace along with a picture of the building. Last night they had a story titled: Zimmerman was previously arrested (in 2005)for “obstruction of justice”

The "looks like he's on drugs" has an interesting connection to the "skittles and arizona tea". Those a street names for "ecstasy/dextromethorphan and marijuana laced with PCP". If the tox screen reveals PCP, that might explain a belligerent, aggressive attitude on the part of Martin. The admonishment from his brother about "taking a swing at the bus driver" on twitter suggests a tendency to get physically violent". We'll have to wait for more input. The real Trayvon Martin was a different person from the innocent looking 12-year old pictured by the press.

NBC just made Zimmerman a very wealthy man.

But just like the Duke Lacross kids, where does he go to get his reputation back?

God, do I hate these media driven slime machines.

Can I ask a stupid question? Do the higher ups at NBC News not know what their own “editorial processes” are for new stories?

Do they have different editorial processes depending on the type of story they are covering, so that’s why they don’t know what the process would have been on this one?

Do they routinely allow stories to go on the air which have not been reviewed by editors? Which then might prompt an interal review such as this one? Is that not a severe lapse in judgement for a news organization if that’s the case????

How many black racists were motivated to maim and murder by this little Liberal Klan act? The liberal media does have blood on it’s hands from their race power witch hunts and ractist “diversity” doctrines.

We have a racist in the White and a racist running the DOJ. Maybe that is why they are arming the mexican drug cartels.

Ecstasy wouldn’t have had such an immediate effect, but PCP laced marijuana would. Rain might pose a problem with that line of thinking, he’d had to have smoked it somewhere. FL isn’t like CA and some other places, where an individual smoking marijuana in public wouldn’t attract attention, or at least central FL isn’t.

The effects might tend to coincide with known or reported behavior as well. Paranoia followed by aggression.

If I were Zimmerman, I would be wondering how I was going to stay alive if I ever left my current hiding place.

Amazing what weasels the networks have become. ABC hides the truth with a chyron and NBC uses deceptive editing. Hey CBS, what you got for us?
