I saw this story last night on FR. I think Homer Wright needs a defense fund.

Looks like his crime was possessing a gun after he had been convicted of crimes involving guns twice in the past. So the issue is the lifetime ban, not the use of the gun.
This is a case of Chicago pols extending a professional courtesy.
The law is an ass, as Mr. Bumble said. It is time for people to demand that one’s home is sacred and that anybody, breaking in should be shot or stopped with deadly force no matter what the reason. Mr Wright is correct. But self-defense is still illegal in Chicago.
