I just listened to the audio tonight, and was interested in the allegations that he used a racial epithet, which would be indicative in the minds of some that there was prejudice and racism behind it from the start.
I ran the audio through Audio Hijack Pro (not an expert) and the part where some people are asserting he called Martin a "F****ng coon" is hard to hear, but I can clearly tell it begins with a "P" and not a "C".
If you listen to it in a loop (which I have linked to) you can make out he is saying "F****g Punks!"
HERE IS A SLOWED DOWN, ENHANCED LOOP OF ZIMMERMAN
It CLEARLY isn't "coons", the word is a puckered "P".
No mistaking it.

I have heard PUNKS from the day it was released. It doesn’t even need enhancement. There is no doubt it is PUNKS.
“Coons” is never even used and males under 30 use the insult “punks” regularly.

I thought it might also be “fxxxing phone” which might make sense since he was talking on a phone, and doesn’t need a time machine as the “coon” quote would require. Punks makes more sense than coons though.

Actually it sounds to me like someone saying “these kids”. And definitely not in an angry manner either.

On the official file it occurs at 2:18 and I listened to it a dozen times with headphones and it is punks not the racial slur on the altered tape on CNN. Recall that the Democrats re-elected Bill Clinton by taping Newt Gingrich on a cell phone saying "we'll let it die on the vine"--it wasn't about Medicare, but after 1,000 repetitions the nation thought it was about Medicare. The word is punks.

Well done. Can you imagine what the narrative would be like had this happened before the Internet? If all we had were the Big 3 to get us information?
