Some Komen Races Miss Their Goals

The breast-cancer charity Susan G. Komen for the Cure continues to face fallout from its Planned Parenthood controversy, as some affiliates report declines in fundraising and attendance at the group's signature races and a series of high-level executives have departed.

Eric Brinker, a businessman and son of Komen's founder, has stepped down from the charity's board of directors, Komen said. Last week, the head of Komen's Greater New York City affiliate said she would step down.

The nonprofit's decision to stop funding breast-cancer screening and education at Planned Parenthood clinics set off a controversy last month.

There is a good book to start with, and lots of info on the web. The book is Knockout by Suzanne somers. Forget her cheesy acting on Three’s Company; the book isn’t about her and barely even by her. Each chapter is an interview with specialists, many MDs, who dare to buck the conventional kill-the-baby-with -the -bath water chemotherapy and who cure people or turn their cancer into something manageable that doesn’t make them sick or shorten their lifespan.

I think anyone who has cancer or knows someone with cancer should read it. Then do more research.

One day the balding, weakening, life-shortening chemo may be seen like leeches and bloodletting.

(I’m not saying it hasn’t helped anyone. But we need to be aware of better treatments down the line by changing our paradigm. I grew up thinking cancer patients went bald. )

Now they are in a situation where the radical feminists are boycotting because they cut of funding to planned parenthood and the conservative right is boycotting because they restored the funding.

At this point, I don't think the loss of funds is due to the feminists. If they hadn't restored the grants to PP, I betcha the race revenue would still be on target. I might have even ran in one.

When some patients are fed only nourishing food and large amounts of deficient hormones, vitamins, etc, they stay well, no sickness, loss of strength, hair, or life, but instead live a full, long life sometimes with a present tumor or even losing it. But even with the breast cancer tumor being present, the patients live a great life, something like people with HIV do. Since this is happening more and more, these moneybags foundations should at least include more support for healthful treatment research rather than focusing only on the pitiable bald chemo patients.

While there is much value in eating nutritiously, there is no evidence that merely eating a healthy diet will slow the spread of cancer. Cancer cells benefit from good nutrition just like any other cells. Furthermore, they tend to grow faster and can be quite aggressive in making sure they get all the nutrients they need. I have used many kinds of cancer cells in research--they *love* good nutrition.

The purpose of chemo and radiotherapy is to kill rapidly growing cells, by interrupting a process like DNA synthesis which happens in growing cells. Unfortunately, some cells grow rapidly but are not cancer cells, which is why the treatments cause such bad side effects. Some current research is based on targeting the chemo drugs directly at the cancer cells, to minimize the number of non-cancer cells killed. Hopefully, those newer targeted therapies will transition to clinical use within the next few years.

What I'm saying is that in the event you ever get cancer (and I sincerely hope you never do), don't rely on diet to save you. You will still need treatment.

I'm sure there are plenty of other breast cancer orgs out there who would enjoy your support. Sometimes the smaller groups do more with the money because they're not weighted down with infrastructure and admin, like big orgs such as Komen, ACS, etc. Here's a listing of cancer research centers across the country. One near you might have info on other non-profits.
