(CNSNews.com) - "The American people aren't stupid," President Obama said on Thursday -- as he insisted that drilling for more oil on U.S. territory is "not a strategy to solve our energy challenge."
The president's solution? Algae, for one.
There are no quick fixes to the nation's eneergy problem, the president said, dismissing Republican calls for more drilling as a "bumper sticker."
"We’re making new investments in the development of gasoline and diesel and jet fuel that’s actually made from a plant-like substance -- algae," the president said at a campaign stop in Florida. "You’ve got a bunch of algae out here, right? If we can figure out how to make energy out of that, we’ll be doing all right."
Obama said the nation could replace up to 17 percent of the oil it imports for transportation with "this fuel that we can grow right here in the United States. And that means greater energy security. That means lower costs. It means more jobs. It means a stronger economy."
Obama's mention of algae drew snorts from one prominent pundit.

Yes, you can, eventually, get petroleum products from algae. The DOE has been funding and studying this for decades.
If everything pans out perfectly, you will not be able to get a million barrels of oil (product) a day from this source in 10 years. Or 100,000 B/D. It just won't happen. Oil from algae, like wind and solar, will not change the energy equation an iota for decades to come.
Has the US executive branch been taken over by space aliens? Is Obama insane? Does he thing we are insane? Are they smoking mind altering recreational drugs in the White House? Just asking.

If algae were a viable source of energy, Exxon, BP, Monsanto, Dupont etc. would be all over it and would not need zero’s guidance or jawboning.

Obama must hate fish and sea life. Seriously, why would those same environmentalists who put up road blocks to all current energy resource development be okay with this one? The algae as energy researchers must have given some big bucks to Zero’s campaign.

Insane, I don’t know (though I’m starting to think so). But dear leader’s certainly removed from reality as far as how gas prices affect Joe Sixpack.
Heck, when was the last time he had to worry about fuel prices or grocery prices cutting into his budget? When was the last time he had to worry about keeping his business running when the price of getting supplies was more than what he brought in every week? And since he’s the last person to be affected by his decrees, what incentive does he have to make sure things work out?

I have seen questions like these raised repeatedly here on FR, and I have to confess, I’ve never understood why.
It’s simple. Such things are floated by the administration and socialists in general for one reason: Not because they’re viable alternatives, but to give the public the impression they’re looking out for their interests (and that of the planet as well), when actually they’re dismantling America’s dependance on oil, and its oil-based economy. They want America to become a 3rd world state run by elitists, but have to voice platitudes to cover their true intentions. It’s simple.
Simple - Joe Sixpack will have to stop using gasoline and electricity. That’s the goal.

For around 5 years now, an energy company here in Kansas has been trying to build a coal power plant (but its been blocked because of environmentalist whacko theories on the harm it might do).
One of the features of the plant is an algae farm...to placate the environmentalists. The algae would consume the co2 produced at the plant...and then it would be converted into fuel.
Not a bad setup. So, in some cases, it may make sense. However, I suspect it could not be scaled up to meet any appreciable percentage of our nation’s energy needs. This is not a ‘new’ technology. The concept of making diesel out of plants is as old as the diesel engine...but hardly anybody actually does it, since its so much more cost efficient to get diesel from oil.
Obama is discovering that many materials can be used to make fuel...and touting them as the ‘next big thing’...when really we’ve already been there, done that.
The Dems have discovered that Green Jobs ,Green Energy is a great big pot of gold and they keep picking at it until it’s empty.
With an algae farm twice the size of WSMR, you can produce the US daily diesel demand.
Good luck with your EPA permit.
Of course we should listen to Obeyme - after all - he has such an excellent record of technology development and commercialization.

Obama does not have one member of his team who has ever developed anything. Van Jones was his choice for Green Energy. A Lawyer - with no industry experience. As in ZERO.

“Drilling just seems so dirty, and you’re punching a hole in the Earth too. Green fuels are clean. We can’t use oil because we might spill it. It will make the Earth dirty.
“Green fuels are, well, green. We don’t need to burn anything. Burning is dangerous. Except for ethanol. It’s ok to burn ethanol. We need electric cars. We don’t need to dwell on what has to be drilled, burned, or spilt to provide the energy for the batteries.

Second problem is the "can figure out" part. IOW, we HAVE NOT "figured out how", and we might well NOT "figure out how" to make useful, affordable energy using the stuff.

None of the above. This is intentional, not happenstance. Obama and his ilk want to cripple energy usage by a combination of forcing prices up and reducing available supplies.
Why? Because the lifeblood of the economy is energy. More and cheaper energy helps the economy grow and thrive, less and more expensive force the economy to shrink.
Don't believe for a minute that Obama wants the economy to improve. A good economy means people are far less interested in surrendering their freedoms for a government handout. The trick is that they want to crash the economy slowly enough to make people forget the way it used to be.

So, he may appear stupid to those of us who approach this country's problems with common sense, but he's brilliant to those who approach America from the standpoint of dismantling it.
Unsubstantiated reports indicate that Obama's Unicorn Gas initiative flopped.
What makes it sillier yet is that he wants us to “invest” (piss-away vast sums of rate payers’ cash) in something that is not likely to produce significant reults for decades while ingoring soltions than can bear fruit in a few years.
Obama would know all about pond scum.
Algae will work. The Planet essentially makes hydrocarbons from layers of dead algae. But somebody should tell The Dear Leader that it takes hundreds of millions of years, incredible heat & pressure. Maybe with the right catalysts you can short-circuit the process, but my guess is that you won’t get the long chain hydrocarbons that store the most energy.
My guess is that Obama slept through science class — if he ever took one.
Heh, if dear leader thinks people are going to go without those, he’s a bigger idiot than I took him for. When it comes to environmental nonsense and taking care of one’s family, the latter will take precedence.
On the bright side, the EPA will never put algae-eaters on the endangered species list, as they are now a clear and present danger to our energy independence.

It is simple. America MUST become a third world country for the world government folks to have any chance at their prize. We are getting closer with each passing second that this administration is in control. Make no mistake, right now they are in control, of the government, the media, the schools, the churches, our food, our health, our very lives. Not our souls, though. Keep praying.
