I am well aware of the progression of the so called ‘right to privacy’ by the SCOTUSes over the decades.
Contraceptives(1960s) >Abortion(1970s) >Homosexual Sodomy(2000s) .
That being said the question about this on the ABC debate was a clever trap. The idea was to make the candidates choose between:
1) There is a right to contraceptives via privacy and there-for a right to abortion.
2) There is no right to contraceptives via privacy, and therefor I look like I hate women and like I want to force them to get pregnant because I never left the dark ages
This was a clever trap and Republicans are rarely ready for them.
Of course #2 is something you and I and Scalia understand but trying to explain the difference between a constitional right versus something we actually want to see outlawed, especially when it is so popular to average voters especially women, is clearly impossible in this climate.
Lesson 1: Don't answer got-ya trap questions directly. Better answer:”As POTUS I would veto any attempt to ban BC by the Federal government. Now can we move on to an issue that is relevent this decade?”
That is especially important for Santorum to do. Let them distort that!
Excellent suggestion. You should sign on as an advisor to the candidates. Sometimes silence says more than words can ever say. You are right. They fell into the trap and are now doing damage control. And not very successfully.

You analysis of the Griswold/Roe line of cases is correct, as is your analysis of the democrat strategy to make the Republican candidates look bad.
There are two other ingredients to this mess:
1. The whole contraception issue is a “red herring” deliberately designed to deflect the public’s attention from the real issues in this campaign, specifically the regime’s destruction of our prosperity through reckless fiscal policy, a horrible energy policy, the emasculation of our military, and finally their attempts to cement their political power in perpetuity by transfer of wealth from the few productive areas left in our economy to the democrats’ traditional unproductive voting blocs, and;
2. That this whole charade would have been ludicrous from the get-go but for the of the regime’s complete control over their propaganda organs in the media, and the media’s complicity in the scheme.
This is a mock election campaign. Enough dumbed-down brain-dead voters have been herded into the collective farms already, and will play their part by voting as they are told, all according to the script. Thanks to our blatantly communist, media, academia and bureaucracy, we have become a Potemkin Village of a Republic.
