A powerful solar eruption, the largest since May 2005 according to NOAA, is expected to blast a stream of charged particles toward Earth, which could force planes to be re-routed.

As the strongest Solar Radiation Storm (S3) since May, 2005 continues, the associated Earthward-directed Coronal Mass Ejection is expected to arrive about 1400 UT (9am EST) Jan 24. SWPC has issued a Geomagnetic Storm Watch with G2 level storming likely and G3 level storming possible, with the storm continuing into Wednesday, Jan 25. All of this activity is related to a moderate (R2) Radio Blackout x-ray flare that erupted Sunday night (11pm EST). Updates will be posted here as we learn more or follow us on Facebook.

Everyone knows that solar flares are all part of man-made climate change caused by George W. Bush.
It doesn’t like Mitt Romney and the lies being foisted by his campaign.

Damage to power grids and other communications systems could be catastrophic, the scientists conclude, with effects leading to a potential loss of governmental control of the situation.
The prediction is based in part on a major solar storm in 1859 that caused telegraph wires to short out in the United States and Europe, igniting widespread fires.
It was perhaps the worst in the past 200 years, according to the new study, and with the advent of modern power grids and satellites, much more is at risk.
"A contemporary repetition of the [1859] event would cause significantly more extensive (and possibly catastrophic) social and economic disruptions," the researchers conclude.

RADIATION STORM IN PROGRESS: Solar protons accelerated by this morning’s M9-class solar flare are streaming past Earth. On the NOAA scale of radiation storms, this one ranks S3, which means it could, e.g., cause isolated reboots of computers onboard Earth-orbiting satellites and interfere with polar radio communications. An example of satellite effects: The “snow” in this SOHO coronagraph movie is caused by protons hitting the observatory’s onboard camera.
ALMOST-X FLARE AND CME (UPDATED): This morning, Jan. 23rd around 0359 UT, big sunspot 1402 erupted, producing a long-duration M9-class solar flare. The explosion’s M9-ranking puts it on the threshold of being an X-flare, the most powerful kind. NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory captured the flare’s extreme ultraviolet flash:

CALIFORNIA AURORAS: Last night, May 14th, an extreme geomagnetic storm sparked auroras across much of the United States. Dennis Mammana took this picture from Borrego Springs in the Anza-Borrego Desert of Southern California:
The storm is subsiding now, but it’s not finished. Sky watchers, especially those in Canada, Alaska and northern-tier US states such as Minnesota and Wisconsin, should remain alert for auroras tonight.
What caused this storm? A coronal mass ejection (CME) hit Earth’s magnetic field. Impact time: May 14th at 0230 UT. Pictured below, the CME left the sun on May 13th, propelled in our direction by an M8-class explosion near sunspot 759. Eighteen hours later it reached Earth and sparked bright auroras.
