Schmidt: GOP Establishment Will Have A Meltdown If Newt Wins Florida
RealClearPolitics ^

Posted on 01/21/2012 8:01:49 PM PST by VinL

Schmidt: "Not only are we not moving toward a coalescing of support with the establishment of Newt Gingrich, we're probably moving toward a declaration of war on Newt Gingrich by the Republican establishment. And if Newt Gingrich is able to win the Florida primary, you will see a panic and a meltdown of the Republican establishment that is beyond my ability to articulate in the English language. People will go crazy,"

And you will have this five week period until the Super Tuesday states that will be just as unpredictable, tumultuous as any period in modern American politics. It will be a remarkable thing to watch, should that happen in Florida."

Maddow: "Is there a component of that which is building a firewall around Mitt Romney, protecting him? We saw the establishment try to do that and Romney helping, saying “You can’t talk any smack about Bain. Bain is what I want to run on, it has to be positive, don’t undercut that at all.” Which to me, was like a flashing red neon arrow, “here’s my glass jaw, please don’t hit it.” Is there a way to protect Mitt Romney other than, I think, this wrong approach, Ithey’ve taken with Bain."

Schmidt: "I think everybody in the establishment Republican circles in Washington D.C. is fixated on the numbers we talked about earlier. Newt Gingrich has a 100% name ID, has a 60% national unfavorable number and it’s a number so high that with the 100% name ID it’s impossible to come back from. You’re not electable in a general election, in a 2012 presidential election if your unfavorable numbers are that high. Particularly against a president, that while vulnerable...

Just one correction: Santorum did not beat Gingrich in NH--those numbers were reversed. Otherwise, carry on. ;^)

You might want to check out this link. Otherwise, carry on. ;)

Newt has the momentum and he can win Florida..Santorum can not win it.

Santorum might not be able to win Florida, but I'm not convinced that Newt can either. And momentum can change on a dime. Just a week ago, Romney had all the momentum. Who's to say Gingrich's will last?

Santorum's better days were in Iowa and it was stolen from him. Santorum's principles are impeccable..but he won't win now. If Santorum causes Newt to lose Florida..he is in it for himself and not the principle...yes, that is my assessment.

You are entitled to your opinion, but I respectfully disagree. (One could also say Newt caused Santorum not to win SC by not dropping out after IA.) I don't think any candidate should drop out at this point unless he wants to--not even Newt. ;)

That’s funny. I just posted yesterday a piece I wrote called “Mitt Romney: a glass jaw Candidate” at http://www.TableOfWisdom,com

“After viewing the Thursday night GOP debate in Charleston, I noticed a recurring pattern with Mitt Romney.

After virtually every hard hitting, direct question - he responds by saying “I’m going to answer your question - BUT FIRST...” then he rambles on with some canned nonsense having nothing to do with the question. It’s pretty obvious that he has these remarks well memorized, having been campaigning for the past six years.

What Mitt seems to be doing is thinking of how he’s going to answer the poignant question while the torrent of dribble effortlessly spills out of his mouth.

You may have noticed that sometime’s he finally follows the ensuing monologue with an insipid answer to the original question posed - and sometimes he exhausts all his time and bores the audience so much that he gets away without answering the question at all.

A classic example would be last night after he rambled on for several minutes without answering the question, he actually had to ask “where were we?” That was when Newt paused and smiled with subtle sarcasm, then said “Gee Mitt, I don’t know”. It was a masterful execution on Newt’s part and demonstrated what an impressive communicator he is. I highly recommend watching that moment again as I don’t think most people appreciated it. It’s worth a rewind.

The thing is that Mitt is only fooling his disciples, the 25% GOP moderates.

The rest of us are tired of the platitudes and question dodging. The November election is going to be a street fight and banal remarks won’t get it done. We cannot send in a paper champion with a glass jaw. Newt is ready for prime-time.

My take from last night: Mitt Romney: a “Glass Jaw” Candidate...”

You’re very brave to watch those shows, Christie. - I don’t. (least not until they invent a way one can enter the screen and slap some folks silly.) I read- that’s bad enough.

You’re also lucky to have a family that shares your passion for politics,— mine thinks I’m a nut to bother. -:)

Nobody said that rebellion would be easy or painless. The establishment will not give up their hold on power without a fight. They’ve pooh-poohed the tea party, denied it, belittled it, loathed it, scorned it, torpedoed it, but now they’re learning to fear it. Fear is good. We have not yet begun to fight!!

Rebellion is here!!

I read the article, which goes onto say (from Schmidt) that Senate races are scared to run with Newt, Well, eff those corrupt fossil incumbents. GO Tea Party challengers. Out with the old, in with the new! Rebellion is here and it's ours! You called it, Jim and I've never been more proud of you!

I'm happy to stand with you and our FReeper patriots. We'll take any pain and give it right right, ten fold. Faux Nation couldn't ignore you! Wait'll we really begin to fight!

We've got a fighter in Newt Gingrich and we're his warriors! Go Newt! Go Tea Party! Go to He// Establishment!

Here's hoping by every vote; that Newt wins Florida. Way past time, for an 'Establishment melt-down'. May we 'make it happen'!

(This will be tougher and nastier; than S.C. for sure.)

What happens when the Republican establishment turns on Gingrich?

Will he respond gently and kindly?

Or will they be treated as debate moderators asking stupid questions are?

“Now all he needs is to avoid Reagan’s mistake of choosing a RINO as VP . . .”

Wasn’t that a burden put on Reagan by the GOP machine? Correct me if I am wrong, please.

Beyond .....!!!!!!!!!
Special place in hell.

When they decide to blatantly mis-represent us
and choose their own vested political, personal
power, financial interests and Beltway bubbahood
over the good of this great nation, they earn the
rebukes and retribution they get, and I feel that
sentiment growing .. and as well for the shamestreams.

POWER TO THE PEOPLE!!!

Did DeMint make any comments tonight?

Heard Newt picked up a pretty good-sized FL
Hispanic group’s endorsement tonight, and Marco
Rubio’s guy is running Newt’s FL Hispanic outreach.

Whew! What a night it must’ve been!! Was it
certain and obvious from the start? JUST WOW!
JIMROB ROCKS!

I think you pegged Romney’s debate technique perfectly. And I think you’re also right, when pressured, he gets visibly shaken. And, I think that’s what people saw- and I think that’s why the Establishment is now concerned. Romney tanking those last 2 debates, hurt him more than Gingrich winning them.

GO NEWTMENTOM! Prayers for our beloved country. Hope
you feel 100% better in the mid ;) morning and sit in God’s healing sunshine for a bit, my dear O. Newt’s NOT on ABC or Fox in the am.

What happens when the Republican establishment turns on Gingrich?
***************

DNA, I think they’ve been against him from day one- don’t you? From what I can see, Newt’s working Tea Party, conservatives (indies, Reps and Dems), and the 50M who don’t usually vote because they’re disaffected (perot crowd)—

The elites of both parties will be his foils-— that’s how it looks to me, anyway.
