Many church-affiliated institutions will have to cover free birth control for employees, the Obama administration announced Friday in an election-year move that outraged religious groups, fueling a national debate about the reach of government.
In a concession, Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius said nonprofit institutions such as church-affiliated hospitals, colleges and social service agencies will have one additional year to comply with the requirement, issued in regulations under President Barack Obama's health care overhaul.
"I believe this proposal strikes the appropriate balance between respecting religious freedom and increasing access to important preventive services," Sebelius said in a statement.
Yet the concession was unlikely to stop a determined effort by opponents to block or overturn the rule. If they fail, some predicted that religious employers would simply drop coverage for their workers, opting instead to pay fines to the federal government under the health care law.
"Never before has the federal government forced individuals and organizations to go out into the marketplace and buy a product that violates their conscience," said New York Cardinal-designate Timothy Dolan, president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops. "This shouldn't happen in a land where free exercise of religion ranks first in the Bill of Rights."

One year from today, Communism in America will be FINISHED, and Obamacare will be DESTROYED!:)
We have been experiencing Ameritopia in small steps for many decades, until Obozo strapped a rocket on the tortoise, he must be stopped now.
. . . or the free exercise thereof. . . .
Sebelius is Joseph Mengele’s daughter.
The woman is mad.
Under what authority does the federal government assume it has any say in this whatsoever? The very idea is infuriating.
“Hi, I’m from the government, and I’m here to help.”
IMO, we cannot require "church-affiliated institutions" to honor Obama's demand for free birth control and, at the same time, refuse to allow employees of church-affiliated institutions to be covered by federal employment rights as the Obama Administration ordered earlier this year.
If there is to be separation of church and state, it must work in BOTH directions, NOT whatever whimsical choice Obama makes on any given day!!
The Church might do better if it explained it religious problems with the Obama Stalinist Regime from the Sunday pulpits (in the same manner as the Black and Liberal/Progressive Churches do) rather than trying to do it with press releases.....it’s called rallying the troops.
When I went to church I never heard a sermon about Abortion or the intrusion of the Government into Religion...if discussed at all, they were done by traveling priests in a place different from the church, like a hall, and they never mentioned Who were the Culprits.
I should further add that this was not even completed by an elected representative of the people—not that this would make it constitutional in the first place—but rather by a Washington bureaucrat under the watchful eye of our excuse of a President.
Something will go to Hell, and it’s not going to be our Liberty.
Excellent question. And who voted in for this law?
The instruction was for the congregation to get up, spill into the streets, and kill all the Communists.
In a few days they did so.
Indonesia hasn't been the same since.
Note: many Indonesian Moslems also decided that meant kill the Chinese.

Translation: You have ONE more year until you lose your religious freedom and you MUST violate your religious beliefs.
Not detached, but evil. She repeatedly invited the late "Tiller the Killer" into the KS governor's mansion, and was his chief enabler, while leading a successful derailment of a state investigation into illegal late term and underage abortions.
Her unparalleled support of late term, abortion on demand made her Obama's favorite for HHS, since they share a love of baby-cide.
