Pelosi says GOP field is not 'first string' of the Republican Party By Dustin Weaver - 01/17/12 11:51 AM ET

The top House Democrat dismissed the Republican presidential contenders Tuesday, saying they represent the "third tier" of the GOP and have no chance of unseating President Obama in November.

"This crowd that they have there, it's not exactly what you would call the first string of the Republican Party," House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said during an interview hosted by Politico. "I think that they can do better than that."

Asked which Republicans would make better contenders, Pelosi demurred. "I would never say," she quipped.

Still, the California Democrat suggested the current Republican field — which includes political veterans such as former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich (Ga.), long-time Texas Rep. Ron Paul and former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum – poses a lesser threat to Democrats than the GOP's younger up and comers.

"You've got the third tier, and the second tier is younger," Pelosi said.

Pelosi focused her criticism most sharply on Romney, the frontrunner leading up to Saturday's primary contest in South Carolina, arguing that his history of changing positions on key issues "doesn't instill confidence" among conservative voters.

"If the far right thought that Romney could win, they might be more enthusiastic about him," she said. "But they question what he stands for, and they don't think he's going to win, so what's the sell?

"They don't think he's going to win in November, so they're like, 'Why should we compromise who we are?," Pelosi added. "Let's be who we want to be and get ready for four years from now … when it's a clean slate, [there's] no incumbent and we can start to get ready building our candidate."

ANY team that considers Nancy Pelosi “first string” is fatally flawed.

I hate to agree with the Wicked Witch of the West, but she is absolutely correct. If the current slate of candidates are the best the GOP can field, then maybe its time the GOP went the way of the Dodo bird:

The evening of the NH primary, CBS had a news break that showed 65% of the voters preferred someone other than those on the ballot.

65% preferred ‘other’

And the Dems? If they didn’t have Obama, who would they run?

Hillary, of course, and she'd get as many or more votes than Obama got the first time around.

In this case, Pelosi is right. Sarah Palin is the first string.

I find that far more comforting than the horrid fact that Pelosi is the first string of the Democratic Party.

I saw Nancy at the Oxnard Community Theater’s production of Mary Poppins. She had the lead.

“Just a spoonful of vermouth helps the gin all go down,
The gin all go down, the gin all go down.”

Oh, she could fly that night all right.

For once I agree with her. The current run of GOP candidates is not at all ‘first string’ when you contemplate Sarah Palin up against this field of candidates.

I agree with Pelosi that none of the current field of GOP candidates has a chance of unseating Obama right now.

HOWEVER, the year is young and I imagine Obama will have plenty of opportunity to screw up bad enough that he could even lose to Ron Paul.
