Why would we ever want to go back to Iraq? And at what cost? I never really understood why we went into Iraq in the first place. But OK maybe that's just me but if you are going to invade and conqueror a nation shouldn't you bring along enough troops to occupy and control the nation?

IIRC Bush's (then) top general warned that the invasion plan did not have enough troops to control Iraq after Sadams army collapsed. Romsfield fired the general and assured everyone that the Iraq's would welcome us with "rose pedals at our feet". So that was the plan to occupy and control Iraq? Rose pedals at our feet? Ok maybe it's just me, but this does not sound like a good plan.

But after open rebellion brought out in Fa-lu-ja and Americans were draged thru the street and hung burning from a bridge by a mob of 100's of Iraqs Maybe it's just me but I would think it was time to open up a serious can of wup ass.

Nope the first battle of Fa-lu-ja ended in a tie, if you can believe that. We got a tad more serious in the second battle of fa-lu-ja and won that one and maybe it's just me but to this day I still can't believe there is one building left standing in that hell hole city. I would have leveled the place with artillery as soon as I knew the facts on how the Americans died there. But that just me.

And then there is the Shiite what's he name with his miltia in southren Iraq that thumps his nose at us all the time. Why is he and his men still walking around and talking?

After taking all of the above into consideration I have decided that Iraq is not worth one dime of American money and not one drop of American blood. But that just me.

Santorum just goes on and on and on...

He, Romney, Paul and Huntsman just don’t know when they have or have not answered a question, so they just shift gears into their memorized talking points that might not even be on topic. Newt and Perry usually quickly answer the question directly and then swing into other things.

I try not to have any hard objects within reach when watching these debates, as I only have one TV. ...Well, I do have a beer can within reach but I’m not about to waste the beer and damage the TV!

I’m just going by memory here, but didn’t the Sanctuary Cities Bill that Perry brought to the Special Session in Austin die on June 23rd?

IIRC, there were some tea party members who were pushing for a 2nd Special Session..keep calling a Special Session until the Sanctuary Cities bill is passed.

Perry did not call a 2nd Special Session because of the cost of calling yet another Special Session of the TX legislature. I was thinking the tab for the first one was something like 1.23 million or some amount, but this is just from memory, so that amount may be off.

I realize some Tea Partiers were of the Opinion that Perry could just keep calling Special Session after Special Session until it was passed, but what would keep Strauss, the Rino Speaker of the House from making sure it died a third time. I mean it was DOA in the regular session, and the special session, right? did Some people think the third time would be the Charm?

Perry is very aware the effect of the Fed’s pulling the money that went to Catholic Charities in TX to help victims of Human Sexual Trafficking.

In San Antonio, this has had an impact already as the police would seek help for these often young victims through the local program for them by the Catholic Church.

The Dem’s in the TX legislature & the Republicans are looking for ways via private donations to keep the help coming to these victims.

You will not find a Dem in TX who will complain about Perry on this, nor will you find a Dem in TX complain about all Perry has done for our returning veterans.

Good posting, sockmonkey! I agree!

After Iowa, when he was going to ‘re-assess’ I thought it was over...but no, he gets the call from Romney to stay in - in exchange for something

To Quote YOU:

"...and yet another FACT-FILLED statement"

To Quote Governor Perry:

"You got a Name?"

What insider in the Perry or Romney Camp told you about this phone call from Romney to Perry?

To Quote Joe Wilson: "You lie!"

Yeah. Newt is the only statesman up there. The rest seem like dingy amateurs to me.

America doesn’t need a “statesman” as POTUS. Obama/Hillary has tried to play that role for three years and the result has been that the USA is less respected throughout the world.

We need someone with the cojones to make tough decisions and kick butt. We DON’T need someone who favors a weaker USA by diminishing the might of our military, bowing to foreigners, committing tax revenue to “green” projects that are failures and shutting down energy generation.

Tell me, WTF are you doing at FR if those issues are “not on your list?” The first two are cornerstones of the conservative cause.

This isn’t just a Perry issue but an issue for every supposedly conservative official with a position of power and a bully pulpit gone unused.

Has anyone noticed that every time one of our guys stands up (like Newt did tonight, Palin in her Facebook posts or whoever) the crowd goes wild and we practically explode with excitement? It’s because it happens so rarely and that the most obvious statements of fact have become so few and far between.

Can you imagine if Perry, or another Repub Gov/Senator/Congressman just decided to follow the platform and stand on principle like the following...I’ll use Perry for the sake of discussion and am not ‘targeting’ him.

An ‘emergency’ press conference is called and invites sent to all major outlets.

“Ladies and gentlemen. Since the Democrat Party stabbed President Ronald Reagan in the back in the mid-80s amnesty deal, hordes of illegals have poured across the border, overwhelming our education, medical and employment system.

(Perry then expounds on the literally tens of billions of dollars every year, hospitals forced to close, class sizes and education numbers that have resulted)

Furthermore, every time the issue is breached, the Democrat party, led by President Obama, trots out unfounded charges of racism, disgustingly smearing American citizens to further their political ends and expand their illegal power base.

Most recently, ‘Sanctuary Cities” policies, where the laws of our state and country are ignored as a matter of official policy by the Democrat Party and it’s members, have resulted in an increase in crime and a flocking of illegal aliens...not “undocumented citizens, ILLEGAL ALIENS - For they are not ‘citizens’ and they are indeed documented in their own countries... to these cities.

That places YOU, the taxpayer at an increased danger for assault, theft, an assortment of other crimes...and you get to pay for their illegal presence, government benefits and lifestyle with your tax dollars.

As of today I have worked with Congressman XXXXX to craft the “End the Madness” bill which will strip all state(or fed) funding from cities refusing to follow the law. This bill will get signed immediately as it is passed.

However until it is passed, not one bill will see my signature. And that included governmental paychecks.
I believe the people of XXXX stand behind me and will immediately pressure their representatives to bring me this bill ready for enactment.

Thank you and good night.

THAT is the kind of thing that makes presidents out of ‘leaders. Perry and others have a bully pulpit sitting unused. Perhaps it’s time they dust it off and watch us voters roar in approval. With the exception of the paycheck thing (and perhaps he has that power there) ANY political leader in a similar position could do and at minimum call for something like the above...then push publicly to make it happen.

Apply that kind of determination to all issues and win big.

Yeah, like Perry said, lets send the troops back into Iraq!

In context, he was referring to preventing IRAN from overtaking Iraq.

Do you ever miss an opportunity to bash Perry in some way?

Can somebody give me a synopsis of what happened in the last 25 minutes of the debate? I tried to stay up, but yesterday I overdid it on my PT run and my body just totally would not allow me to stay up. Still feel like garbage this morning. So my notes are for the first hour or so?

First, ABC had a clear agenda. First part was to let Paul make a fool of himself with the foreign policy questions (not difficult to do). Second part was to make Santorum look like some radical right-wing social extremist. My take.

6. I thought Paul was going to lose it last night and walk off the stage. He really showed his 76 years of senility last night. Speech was slurred, etc. There’s one clip I thought he was going to have a stroke. With Bachmann out, appears Paul took up the “attack dog” mode. I think he was more vicious last night than usual. Kudos to Newt and Santorum for stomping him down. I got the feeling that Romney was enjoying this exchange because Paul seemed to be doing his dirty work.

5. Has anybody figured out that at some point, Huntsman has tried to adopt Paul’s foreign policy. That’s what it sounds like. Why this guy is still on the stage is a joke. If he gets 13% in NH, Paul: 22%, and Romney 40%, that’s 75% of voters in NH that are morons.

4. Didn’t see anyone go after Romney. 3 more debate chances too, but time is running out here. He just goes along with the debate and does the “safe” thing everytime, and the manufactured Stephanopolous incident made him look good.

3. Santorum was good. For those that didn’t like Bachmann, notice that when Santorum casts his differences, he manages to do so while crediting Newt and others at the same time. I suppose we’ll start hearing about how he moves his arms too much when he talks. He got the better of the exchange with Paul, and held his own on the social issues. I didn’t think he was wobbly at all.

2. Okay, Perry got more speaking time than I thought he did, and they’re trying to turn the whole Iraq comment into a gaffe? WTF? Perry’s main point was that it’s important to keep a strong presence in Iraq to ensure the Iranians don’t overrun the country which they most certainly will if they get the chance, and drive up the price of oil. Perry’s comments complemnented Newt’s remarks on getting America “energy independent” and not “kowtowing to the Saudi prince”.

Newt went back to the original debate forumla he used in the previous months. From what I can remember, got the two largest applauses from what I watched. His usual “attack the media” comment this time was on their ignorance of the rampant Anti-Christian-biogtry in the media and the other was on the Catholic Church adoption programs being shut down in Mass after gay marriage was adopted. Still, was a disappointed he didn’t go after Romney. Hopefully he is saving it for the SC debates.

By the way...new Newt drinking game: take a shot whenever Newt uses the word “Fundamentally”. I promise you will be hammered by the end of the debate.

Finally, the real winner of last night’s debate was the New Orleans Saints.

Thank you, mylife. You’re one of the few who get what Perry was driving at. He was dismayed at the price in blood we paid in Iraq only to let it devolve into a satellite of Iran.

I agree.

He thinks the only way to pay due respect to that blood is to prevent the overthrow of Iraq via military force. He could be right.

He was one of only two with military experience on the stage, so I can see his connection to the troops. Their sacrifice is undermined by the actions of the Obama government.

Here is where I would differ with the decision to re-enter Iraq: I thought we fought the war wrong in the first place. It should have been a strike, a clearing of enemies from the country, a search for WMDs, and then a departure.

Turkey is proof that democracy doesn’t ultimately work in despot-loving islam.

Diane Sawyer “worked” her way to the top by, shall we say, “handling things” for the decrepit, senile, 80-year-old William Paley, then pres of CBS news. She was, and remains, shameless.

Unfortunately, I’m afraid Newt might be your typical behind-the-back bully: he goes after people when they’re not around, then becomes a smarmy sycophant when face to face. Did it to an embarrassing extent with Clinton. And with Pelosi — well, we all recall the shameless share-the-couch moment that will live in infamy.

That’s why I don’t share the enthusiasm some have for a Newt-Obama debate.

Still and all, I’d vote for Newt over the current Marxist president in a heartbeat.
