(CNN) -- U.S. sailors from a carrier strike group whose recent presence in the Persian Gulf drew the ire of Iranian military officials have rescued 13 of the Middle Eastern country's sailors from a hijacked fishing boat, a military spokesman said Friday.

The destroyer USS Kidd came to the aid of the ship Thursday in the North Arabian sea, near the crucial Strait of Hormuz, according to the Navy.

The rescue prompted the captain of the freed ship to offer his "sincere gratitude," according to Josh Schminky, a Navy Criminal Investigative Service agent aboard the Kidd.

How nice, now that they have seen what we will do when they signal that they need assistance, they can plan for an attack during it. They should have thrown them life boats, while flying war planes overhead, and steamed away.

ironic since a previous USS KIDD, but not this one was one of the 4 modified SPRUANCE destroyers (the “dead admiral” class) bought by the shah.

Be kind to your enemies and it will be as though you heraped burning coals......

That is a good concept but the last I checked the navy usually does not do unto others. This kind deed will not stop Iran from attacking Israel or anyone they want. They should have been left with the pirates. Is Obama going to now write them a strongly worded letter saying we saved you so stand down on your nukes...and they will say okay?

Agreed, and in addition most of the Iranians/Persians here in America are pretty decent folks. I also don't believe that the people in Iran, on a whole, are enamored with islam (they'd prefer their historical Zoroastrian religion), but they have to follow the Mullahs' decrees to survive.
So I'm glad our Navy helped. It may be that we have to bash heads in the near future - due to the Mullahs and Boy King's incompetence - but until then, I'm glad we helped.

They may try to blow up our ships but we just blew their minds instead. I hope this action might help some future luckless American who falls into the hands of the Iranians. Nothing shows the lies of a government more then action that contradicts everything they tell their people.

They should have been left with the pirates.

No decent sailor is ever going to abandon a fellow mariner in distress -- even an enemy -- if he can render assistance without danger to himself or his vessel.

“Dead Admiral Class” also known as the “Ayatolla Class” because the 4-ship package was purchased by the Shah, but never delivered due to the Iranian Revolution.

Well it wasn't a decent sailors decision it was NATO’s and Obama’s.Don't get me wrong it sounds nice and righteous but it is a tad kumbaya sounding.

Baloney. In the middle of America's worst wars, the Navy rescued enemy sailors in distress.

You’ve never been in the sea services, then. You don’t leave sailors - even enemies - in the hands of the sea or pirates. It’s - not - done.

Some folks just don't get it.

I cheer when the Russians take out pirates.

I cheer when the bloody North Koreans take out pirates.

Pirates are everyone's enemy, and The Sea is merciless to all.

according to Josh Schminky, a Navy Criminal Investigative Service agent aboard the Kidd.

WWGD? (What would Gibbs do)? Remember, Gibbs was a Marine, one who usually didn't leave an enemy standing.

In all seriousness, I'm glad we did this. First we are humans, then members of a classification like a nation or religion.

The Sea is merciless to all.

Key phrase. When you're in the water, the only enemy you have is the sea.
